Celtic music from Wales – Friday, September 16 – 8PM
Calvert Marine Museum

The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland, in partnership with the Calvert Marine Museum spice up the Autumn Celtic Music Concert by showcasing Celtic music from Wales with an up and coming talented group called "Calan." Fiddles, guitar, accordion, bagpipes and step dancing explode into life as Calan perform songs and tunes from their new album "Dinas". Infectious guitar rhythms and high voltage routines give way to beautiful and haunting songs as they continue touring throughout the USA to celebrate their latest release. Amongst the traditional Welsh melodies and brand new original material, they breathe fire into the folk tale of Merlin and The Two Dragons: A song that tells the story of why there is a dragon on the Welsh flag.

The title Dinas is taken from the name Dinas Emrys; a mountain in Gwynedd, North Wales. During the 5th century it is believed two dragons once slept within the mountain hidden in the depths of a secret lake. During the night the dragons would awake and fight making the ground shake and tremor. When the Celtic king Vortigern attempted to build a castle on the hill in the 5th century the stones and walls were repeatedly shaken to the ground. The legend says the problem was solved by a nine year old boy gifted with magic. His name was Merlin and Wales had found a great magician and the emblem for its flag.

In 1945 the site was excavated by archaeologists who discovered a lake and the ruins of a fortress dating to Vortigern’s time. The walls showed signs of having been rebuilt several times. So be careful where you tread....

Keep an eye on Calan's web site and facebook page throughout the year where you will be able to learn tune of the month and clog step of the month. These will be quick video lessons for anyone wanting to learn a few tunes featured on the album or pick up some Welsh clog steps. So whether you live in Europe, Asia, America or where ever you are in the world you can all join in.
To coincide with the tour in November people can join in the search for their own dragons by following a set of clues given out at the gigs and on the web site. The clues will lead to 2 ornamental dragons hidden near a mountain somewhere in Wales. Best of luck.

This performance will be held at the Calvert Marine Museum’s Harms Gallery. Concert begins at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm for pre-concert beer and wine sales. Tickets can be purchased in advance on line (some discounts apply) at https://cssm.ticketleap.com.
