House GOP Votes To Strip Independence From Congressional Ethics Office

Ubi bene ibi patria
" The House Republican Conference voted Monday night to approve a change to House rules to weaken the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics and place it under the jurisdiction of the House Ethics Committee — a panel controlled by party leaders.

It will be part of a broader House Rules package voted on by the full body on Tuesday, after the 115th Congress officially convenes and the House elects a speaker.
It's a move that is already causing a backlash among Democrats, who say it's hypocritical given that President-elect Donald Trump was elected vowing to "drain the swamp" in Washington.

The Office of Congressional Ethics was established in 2008 under House Democrats, in response to the era of lobbying scandals made notable by Jack Abramoff, the former lobbyist who went to prison on corruption charges.

It is the first independent body to have an oversight role in House ethics. There is no Senate counterpart. The OCE independently reviews allegations of misconduct against House members and staff, and if deemed appropriate refers them to the House Ethics Committee for review. The OCE cannot independently punish lawmakers for any ethics violations.

The language approved Monday night, authored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., would prevent staff from making public statements independent of the House Ethics Committee.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who was speaker when the OCE was created, criticized the decision in a statement.

"Republicans claim they want to 'drain the swamp,' but the night before the new Congress gets sworn in, the House GOP has eliminated the only independent ethics oversight of their actions," she wrote. "Evidently, ethics are the first casualty of the new Republican Congress." "

 Can you say Reid, Pelosi, or Obama? I knew you could. They wouldn't know 'ethics' if their lives depended on it; which, now, it does. The flip flops the libprogs wear are, now, hurting their feet; thus the tantrums. :tantrum: I am enjoying every minute of it. Pay back is hell!

We got a good dose of the Pelosi Ethics standards when they didn't prosecute Maxine Waters, and slapped Charlie Rangels hand.

I did a lot of scoping out on the Internet this morning - because there HAD to be a reason why anyone would propose this - and there was.

Try to first consider, this was proposed by Pelosi and the Democrats when they held the House and Senate. It was created back in 2010.

The REASON - was the damned thing was abused. It had no power to punish, but could be used with very little rationale and people found themselves battling bogus claims and legal bills.
No why would anyone do something like that? It was SUPPOSED to be non-partisan - but when does that happen in Washington?

So I'm going to wait and see. It's not as though the Congress has NO oversight for Ethics.

You mean actual oversight, with real actual punishments for wrongdoing? And this applies to both parties. As long as the ethics oversight is used to punish the other party while protecting yours, it's not really oversight. Just look at Rangel and Waters. How in the flying hell do people with that level of criminality and corruption not end up out on their asses? What organization sees that stuff go on and does not boot the person out?

That's besides the point. You 'reform' it. Improve it. Fix it. Make it stronger. Point out how poor Nancy did with the thing. Anything but be in a position, right away, of ending an ethics watchdog thing.

They didn't end it. They moved it.

Trump is right on this one....

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump called out House Republicans Tuesday for proposing a measure that would gut an independent ethics panel, although the President-elect suggested the ethics panel was "unfair."

"With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it ... may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS," Trump said over two consecutive tweets.

When you have the majority of the media against you, your PR battles are going to fought with one foot on a banana peel.

Oh, for ####s sake. You're not stupid. You don't suffer any bran damage, do you? Every hear of a guy named Donald Trump? You freaking fight back. You seize the initiative.

And two wrongs don't make a right. Not right for them, not right for us. The message was to stop playing these games and get stuff done. Not spend your time trying to soil the nest in advance in case the other guy gets to move in. If we decry it when they do it, it's not right for us.

TJ, boy, and a few others heads are going to explode when they hear that the GOP decided to not eliminate the committee. Why you ask? Because the PEOTUS tweeted his opposition to it. So now, what does the left do? Praise Donald or the GOP? Somebody has to be given credit.......
