Donald Trump, who never served in the military, goes after Senate veterans

" Washington (CNN)When he wanted to dispute a Democratic Senator over his Supreme Court nominee, President Donald Trump went after the senator's misstatements about serving in Vietnam. And as he defends the first military mission he approved, Trump, who did not himself serve in the military or Vietnam, is again tangling with fellow Republican John McCain, a decorated Vietnam veteran and former POW.

The decision to take on veterans could put Trump on shaky ground: The President never served in the military and received student and health deferments that kept him out of serving in the war.

In a string of tweets on Thursday morning, Trump took on McCain for suggesting his first military action -- a raid in Yemen that netted intelligence against ISIS, but cost the lives Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens and a number of Yemeni civilians -- was not a success. Trump also lashed out against Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who told reporters on Wednesday that Neil Gorsuch, Trump's Supreme Court pick, told him that he felt Trump's comments about the judiciary branch were "demoralizing" and "disheartening."

Trump's tweets appear to be an attempt to quiet dissent, even from those within his party.

McCain, who was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and was held as a prisoner of war until 1973, questioned Trump's raid earlier this week, suggesting that the White House should not have called in a "success" because Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens was killed. "

SAo Trump shouldn't criticize somebody for lying about military service because Trump himself has lied about military service??

When did Trump lie about his military service? He's been clear that he never served and got a student and medical deferment.

Also, check the language CNN uses: "lashed out" . This is bias and should have no place in a reputable news source.

They're clearly siding with McCain, but you let him try and run against one of their own again and see what happens.

Apparently no one has ever won a war, because winning is success and I don't know of a war that was won without victims on both sides.

McCain makes a lot of sense - assuming he has one of those "coexist" stickers on his car, too.

oops....Mr. Spicer made the exact same comments last week...oops...

At press briefings this week and last week, Spicer had repeatedly said that the loss of life made it "hard" to deem the operation a success.

Does McCain call his mission a success in Viet Nam ? Shot down in a plane costing millions.

When you meet the enemy things happen.

John McCain is like a T-bone steak. A fine cut of meat when it is set before you, but once digested turns into --well you know what it turns into.
John McCain called a hero and perhaps he was, but how long does that status last after digestion' and how does being a POW make you an expert on all things military?

John McCain ran for President and lost, very unsuccessful that.
If it wasn't for Sarah Palin he would have lost even worse.

I am reading Trump's post in the context of showing the irony of McCain who got bent when Trump said "he liked people who weren't captured" is all up in the headlines declaring the raid a failure because a seal was killed.

As for Spicer's statement... of course it makes it hard to deem an operation a success because we want zero body count for any given raid. This is basic emotion so I'm not sure how anyone can jump straight to "So there! He said FAILURE!"
