DeVos Backlash Sees Parents Threatening to Homeschool Kids

Among the initial opposition to Betsy DeVos' confirmation this week as education secretary were calls on social media by parents, including liberals, to start homeschooling their children.

That reaction to DeVos — a billionaire school-choice advocate who has never worked, attended or sent her kids to a public school — reflects how polarizing her nomination was.

It also comes layered with paradox.

That's because DeVos, whom the Senate confirmed Tuesday to head the Education Department, is herself a big proponent of homeschooling.

Do It! Do It! I'd love to see the whole flippin' public school system fail.

I'd rather not. I have kids in public school and can't afford to put them in private school. Especially if the system fails and costs for the limited slots shoot through the roof.

This has nothing to do with the kids, it all about their base like the teachers union, they could get two F*ck about the kids

Ya' know, it would be rough for a lot of people, but nobody said life was easy.

Fear not. There will always be public education. The goal is to break the hold of the Socialist teachers unions and actually educate kids instead of using them as political footballs and social experiments like they do now.

Liberal home schooling is a great idea.
The less kids in school the smaller the classes and the better for the kids.

Still I don't think the liberal thought this out. Can they really believe that they can homeschool and brainwash their kids with liberal ideas as well as the professional brain washers? And where would they get their diversity.?
It might also mean they would have to place their kids in day care all day instead of having them baby sat by teachers.

I agree with you... I have two that went through the public school system and I'm a firm believer that kids going to school is just as much about learning to navigate in society as it is to learn A B Cs and 1 2 3s.

didn't you claim to be homeschooling your kids?

I'm not a progressive raging at DeVos appointment.

The OP is all about raging Progressives - progressives that piss an whine about Christians wanting to Home School [or demanding Voucher Programs to get the children out of ####ty schools] because Christians don't like the Agenda pushed by Common Core, Teachers UNIONS and Progressives.

now suddenly DeVos is going to turn and I quote:

As our schools devolve into a ####witted, Jesus-humping hellscape, my decision not to have children is looking positively heroic right now.
— Geoff LaTulippe (@DrGMLaTulippe) February 7, 2017

good thing i’m not having kids since betsy devos will ruin any chance of them succeeding academically
— jordan (@gayelainebenes) February 7, 2017

On the bright side, maybe DeVos' nomination will be the reason people stop having kids for a few years.
— Austin Gebbia (@DearMorni) February 7, 2017

Welp. Good thing I’m never having kids. #devos
— Healy Chen (@chenhealy) February 7, 2017

Now that DeVos is secretary of education, at least I know that having kids is not in the picture for the next four years because nope
— Daisy Gonzalez (@daisygonzalez94) February 7, 2017

now suddenly Progressives

1) are glad they never had children
2) pulling their children out of public schools

Then they'll end up loving her as she's huge supporter of home schooling...

I wouldn't worry too much about Progressives taking their kids out of public schools to homeschool them. Once they learn that they still have to pay taxes to support the public system and they have to foot the entire bill for homeschool as well, they'll blanch, puke and balk.

This is almost as funny as Hollywood threatening to stop the Academy Awards. as if anyone gives a damn.

The reason you think somd members are hypocrites is because the majority are conservatives. You can't handle that, and it shows in your posts. Do you have your safety pins, coloring books, puppies, blankies, and pacifiers close by? That would help you, immensely. Just looking out for you.

are we projecting again ... or just having a reading comprehension problem where have I ever said I Home School

I have no issues with Home Schooling but this is not about me, as much as you try ...

I am not part of the progressive establishment that has railed for years about home schooling and voucher programs and yes Home Schooling ...
but now that someone at the Cabinet level that advocates for reform [ie less Federal Gov. in your local school system] and School Choice - Vouchers and Charter Schools progressives are suddenly

:cds: I'm gonna pull my kid out of school and home school

Okay, got it. My life is easy. You have a blessed day.

I didn't say that. Few people have it easy. We all work, we all go home and wash the dirty laundry and walk the dog. Some have more to do than others. Some might have it a little easier. My life's not easy, but it's a life I love.
You have a blessed day, too.
