Civil forfeiture, which allows police to permanently seize assets from suspects as part of an investigation, has risen dramatically in recent years.

But rarely has the controversial process been visualized more starkly than this video shot in Berkeley, California over the weekend, in which Officer Sean Aranas writes a man a ticket for selling hot dogs without a permit and then opens up the man's wallet and removes every bit of cash.

I never saw a cop go int a man's wallet and take out money.
That aint right.

But did he check this guy's green card?
That's not an issue.

Sanctuary and all that.

Plus, if he deported him the cop wouldn't get a chance to rob him again in the future.

You are right, It's Berkely, sanctuary site and all that. But going in that man's wallet and taking his money is BS.

Bingbingbing, we have a WINNAH!!!!!. If this vendor is from where I think he is from, he's quite used to an officer generated sidewalk operation tax.

Poor Spanish guy, and he thought he left the Thug Policìa behind in Puebla.

.$hit like that should be on the National News each night..
Remember when cable would have the local most wanted show each week...
How about a show called a$$hole cops overstepping their authority..

I guess we already have it... Cops....

Yessir. Ignorance on display every night.

Cop-> Hey you, you're jaywalking get over here.
Guy-> I don't think it's jaywalking since this is a parking lot.
Cop-> Are you trying to tell me how to do my job? I know the law.
Cop-> What's in the backpack.
Guy-> Books and stuff, for school.
Cop-> Hand it over.
Guy-> Why, I didn't do anything wrong.
Cop-> Are you failing to obey a lawful order!!!??
Guy-> I don't think so, don't you need probable cause to search my bag?
Cop-> I have probable cause; you j-walked, failed to obey, and are visibly under the influence.
Cop-> *forces guy to the ground, puts knee in his back, takes bag*
Cop-> ah ha! drug paraphernalia.
Guy-> (muffled) that's a vase I made for my art class
Cop-> No, it's a bong. Your going to jail.....

Asset forfeiture is a lovely thing when used for its intended purpose. This particular incident is bull####.

It is, but with police agencies across the country padding their own budgets (or just trying to prove a point/lesson as I suspect is the case with this story) for years now, it's become more than taking drug money away from kingpins.

You forgot the part where the cop tells the perp multiple ties to stop resisting.

Good lord.

A bicycle cop on a college campus has to be the lowest of the low in cop-dom. Might be about on par with mall cop.
