Time Warner shares were down 6 percent Wednesday after the Justice Department demanded that CNN's parent be sold before a merger with AT&T can be approved.

CNBC confirmed the Justice Department's demand that Turner Broadcasting or DirecTV be sold before approval of the $85 billion merger.

AT&T's stock price was up slightly.

Earlier Wednesday, AT&T's chief financial officer John Stephens said the timing of the deal was "now uncertain."

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized CNN as fake news in the past year.

Actually, your post title is misleading......

The DoJ demand is that AT&T either sell CNN and parent company -OR- sell DirecTV.

So the President who claims to be committed to cutting out regulation, red tape, and other government interference in markets now wants to dictate what a company does with its assets which it already purchased and owns?

Does one cable outlet really tip the scales from competitive to anti-competitive to the point where anti-trust laws are an issue?

While it might be hard to make the case that this is a personally motivated decision by the President, it’s not hard to make the case that it’s a foolish one.
