I was skipping class with others on day in 8th grade back in 1972, Quaaludes just hit the streets not long before. Which assumes that that comment from the baynet is accurate. Other than sounding a bit more believable than "real" ODs, we have nothing factual to back that up.
Unlikely they were "left out", more likely the kid knew exactly what they were and took them for that reason. The pot shop isn't selling these, so someone had to make them themselves. Lots of instructions on the Internet for how to make them.
Or just drive an hour or so north into DC and buy ready-made edibles.
