Judges 17 Stolen Silver

Judges 17:Now a man named Micah from the hill country of Ephraim 2 said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels[a] of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a curse—I have that silver with me; I took it.”

Then his mother said, “The Lord bless you, my son!”

3 When he returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, she said, “I solemnly consecrate my silver to the Lord for my son to make an image overlaid with silver. I will give it back to you.”

4 So after he returned the silver to his mother, she took two hundred shekels(b) of silver and gave them to a silversmith, who used them to make the idol. And it was put in Micah’s house.

5 Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and some household gods and installed one of his sons as his priest. 6 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.

a. Judges 17:2 That is, about 28 pounds or about 13 kilograms
b. Judges 17:4 That is, about 5 pounds or about 2.3 kilograms

So Micah stole the silver from his mother and when he returned it she made an idol from it for him? Check out verses 5-6. He set up a church of his own. He set his son up as priest of his church! In those days "everyone did as they saw fit".

I know people like this mother.... I've seen people like Micah. Today, wouldn't we call this a cult?

I just deleted the long discussion on verses 5-6 from blueletterbible.org. These postings every morning are getting longer and longer and longer. There was a lot of preachy moments in the commentaries this morning.

Micah's mom was happy to have her silver back. She didn't care that he had stolen it.... she was just so happy to have it back. To celebrate... she set part of it aside as a sort of offering. She had some of it melted down. It was recast as a shiny little idol for her son Micah who promptly started his own religion with his own son as the priest.

This could get interesting....
