Judges 18 Oh Brother

Judges 18:5 Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful.”

6 The priest answered them, “Go in peace. Your journey has the Lord’s approval.”

7 So the five men left and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living in safety, like the Sidonians, at peace and secure. And since their land lacked nothing, they were prosperous.[a] Also, they lived a long way from the Sidonians and had no relationship with anyone else.(b)

8 When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their fellow Danites asked them, “How did you find things?”

9 They answered, “Come on, let’s attack them! We have seen the land, and it is very good. Aren’t you going to do something? Don’t hesitate to go there and take it over. 10 When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever.”

11 Then six hundred men of the Danites, armed for battle, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol. 12 On their way they set up camp near Kiriath Jearim in Judah. This is why the place west of Kiriath Jearim is called Mahaneh Dan[c] to this day. 13 From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah’s house.

a. Judges 18:7 The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain.
b. Judges 18:7 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts with the Arameans
c. Judges 18:12 Mahaneh Dan means Dan’s camp

Oh brother.... Jonathan the Levite from Bethlehem is a fake priest. There are lots of shiny idols in that house.... Jonathan didn't "inquire" of the Lord. The Lord wouldn't have bothered with someone who had a temple full of junk for other tiny gods.

This is from the easy English site.

They asked him to tell them whether they would be successful. He gave to them the answer that they wanted. He was careful to do that. His answer included a reference to God.

The 5 men from Dan’s tribe started from Zorah. Then they travelled 100 miles to Laish. There, streams flowed into the Jordan river. The streams supplied it with plenty of water. Mount Hermon separated this area from Syria. The Lebanon range separated it from Phoenicia. The people were separate from other people and they had not prepared for an attack. Some men went to discover what the country was like. They said that it was very good. As a result, 600 men from Dan’s tribe took their wives and families. And they started to travel to the north.

You know what.... Men were in charge back then. Women were only responsible for pleasure, the child bearing, child rearing, and homemaking. Men made all the decisions. Now if men make stupid decisions based on their lack of research.... that's one thing. I wouldn't be upset about these verses if Jonathan had only endangered the lives of the men with this bad advice. I'm angry because women and children are involved. They are in danger now because Micah stole silver from his mother.... who set up a shrine when he returned it.... and Jonathan the unemployed Levite set up a private practice at Micah's shrine. Now the Danites have found Micah's shrine and they met Jonathan and mistaken him for a real priest. That's when they drug the women and children into this.
