Ruth 2 Who is that?

Ruth 2:4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The Lord be with you!”

“The Lord bless you!” they answered.

5 Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”

6 The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi. 7 She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”

Boaz approached Ruth, speaking to her as a father would to his daughter. He strongly encouraged her to remain in his field and not to go to any other. He urged her to stay close to his female workers. In addition to this, Boaz would instruct the young men not to touch her. When she got thirsty, she should drink from the water which his servants had drawn.

We come now to the first meeting of Boaz and Ruth and we get a glimpse of Ruth’s character that pleased Boaz. As we have previously mentioned, under God’s law Ruth had a right to glean and gather after the reapers. However Ruth did not enforce her rights but came by grace asking ‘p lease let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves’. If we are ever going to know the Lord further we also need to learn to come to Him by grace. We cannot come to the Lord claiming our rights or presenting our good works as something that he must repay us for. No, the throne of grace is open and available to those who see that grace is the only way open for them to come. We also see Boaz attitude towards Ruth. The first thing he says is ‘whose young woman is this?’ I once read in a commentary on Ruth that a very, very, very loose translation on this verse would be ‘well, where in the world has she been that I haven’t seen her before!’ Told you it was loose – but it’s good!

Here's a reminder of where Ruth came from....

This is from bible-history.com.

Originally the territory of ancient Moab was dominated by a race of giants known as the Emim.

Moab was a constant thorn and in Israel's side, and their relationship was marked by constant enmity.

It started with Balak the King of Moab when he hired a Mesopotamian diviner named to Balaam to sabotage the Israelites.

During the time of the Judges of Israel the Moabites had constantly oppressed the Israelites for 18 years, until finally Eglon the King of Moab was assassinated by Ehud one of the Israelite judges

Now let's review....

The Moabs were related through Lot.... after the destruction of Sodom, while living in a cave.... Lot's daughter had an incestuous encounter with Lot... and that child was named Moab..... and it's important to remember that.....

So the story of the left-handed guy who left the King in the bathroom to die.... is important....

Ruth was a poor widowed Moabite.
Boaz was a rich Israelite land owner.

The commentaries are talking about the "right" of this Moabite to work in the fields. Actually.... they all seem to forget that Ruth was not an Israelite. Ruth was a Moabite. She was an outsider.... a widow.... poor.....

She might as well have been asking permission to dumpster dive....

So now we know something about both of the great great great whatever grandparents of Jesus Christ.
