On Monday night, a dog died in a plane after a United Airlines flight attendant forced the dog into an overhead bin.
I thought for sure this was going to be one of those fake stories that dumb people pass around the internet, but apparently not. All the major news sites have the story and United issued a response:
"This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin," United stated. "We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again."
I don't even know what to say about this and I'm still not convinced it isn't a fake. I have never been on a single flight where there was room in the overhead for a dog carrier, and you'd think the owner would have vehemently objected to this and left the flight rather than risk her dog's life. Also, where were the other flight attendants when this one was trying to cram a dog in the overhead? Finally, the boarding attendant would have known that the dog's crate wouldn't fit under the seat and would have stopped the passenger right there.
There's a lot wrong with this story that makes me think it's bull####. If that turns out to be the case, I hope United sues the living chit out of the woman who made it up.
