This winter 2018 - spring/summer 2019 we're heading to the southwest. West TX, AZ, NM, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, etc. We have no set itinerary or route at this point and are looking for suggestions.

Where are some cool places to go?

And how much time should we plan for Grand Canyon? A week? A couple of days? An hour or two?

Open to any and all suggestions and thanks for your help!

Nothing specific, but while out there you should try to find Fenn's treasure.

IRT the Grand Canyon, depending on how much you want to see, plan on at least a day. I was in AZ in July 2015 and the GC was one of my stops. We spent the night outside the main gate (south rim) and was able to get some beautiful sunset photos that evening. We spent the next morning traipsing along the top trails most of the following morning. We drove east along the rim stopping at all the overlooks for more pictures on our way out.

We then headed south to spend the night in Sedona, only to find no rooms available. We backtracked to Camp Verde for the night. This turned out to be a bit of a blessing because the night before heading into Sedona, it was pitch dark and POURING rain so we didn't see any of the red rocks, etc. The following morning was crystal clear and made for a beautiful ride. We stopped and did quite a bit of hiking. After a bit of window shopping and a DELICIOUS lunch at the Hideaway House http://www.sedonahideawayhouse.com/?utm_source=tripadvisor&utm_medium= we headed south again and stopped in the old town of Jerome. http://azjerome.com/jerome/gallery/ Jerome is a really cute artsy-fartsy town. It also had a pretty awesome head shop. We wandered around for a few hours before heading back to Gilbert for the rest of my visit.

Another place to check out not far from Phoenix is the Superstition Mountains http://www.arizona-leisure.com/superstition-mountain.html and the Goldfield Ghost Town. Be sure to check out the saloon!

Prescott is also a cute town. We stopped and had lunch here https://www.historicpalace.com/

I have a ton of pics, but I only loaded a few on my FB. If you want to see some, I can get them to you.

If you pass thru northern Arkansas, you could stop at Eureka Springs. Neat tourist area, everything is built on a hillside part of the Ozarks, you know, with the banjos playing and everything.... There are still natural spring baths in operation.

:yeahthat:

I was there in the 80's and fell in love with Eureka Springs! A friend of mine visited there a few years ago and she fell in love with it too.

Fun fact... when I visited Eureka Springs, I still lived in California and lived on Eureka Avenue and banked at Eureka Federal Savings!

We visited there today. Great, little find tucked back in the woods. I bet that place was a fantastic place to live 70 years ago. Got a good work out going up the steps a few times. The virus has forced them to cancel all of their festivals and other city activities which is too bad because there seems to be a lot of civic pride. For a small town off the beaten path, they sure had a lot of visitors today. Which was great to see. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Once they let my dad out of lockup, I hope to take him there for a day or two.
Make sure he wears comfortable shoes. Lots of walking and plenty of steps to cover. They have a shuttle trolley that we didn't take due to time. Seems like a nice way to get an idea of the layout before you commit.

We've been there before. :yay:
