I'm currently using Verizon's 3G service - I have a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 router and 2 different modems (a Novatel USB727 with an external antenna and a MiFi 2200). The 727 contract is up (so I'm month to month) and the MiFi is almost out of contract. I have both because 5G transfer/month was not enough for me. So I'm paying $120 a month for service. Sounds like once I'm out of contract on both - it may be wise (and cheaper) to switch to the 4G, even though the coverage isn't in this area.
For anyone using a Verizon 4G modem and a Cradlepoint, which model modem are you using - and does it allow for an external antenna hookup? What are your experiences with it? I've heard stories of some modems not properly downgrading to 3G.
I use the Pantech UML 290 usb modem on a Mac Book Pro
It has an external antenna and I use it when in fringe areas. You have to order the pigtale from verizon store or a third party "they dont stock it". The antenna for 4g cant be gotten from verizon as they dont make one.
The Frequency for 4g is 746 to 806 mhz ,this works so much better than 1900 mhz of 3g, it penetrates buildings much better and makes the long haul better.
I got my antenna from ZDA communications, its a 10 element yaggi beam and it really works the long distance. I had AJ at JEFA tech run an analyzer on it and the graph was very impressive with a steep attenuation of any and all out of band signals.
You could upgrade one of your 3g lines to the UML 290 modem with a 10 gig cap for 80$ a month and drop the other line this will save you 40$ a month. It will still work on the 3g service and when 4g comes to town you are already set. They say it will be everywhere in 2012.
The UML 290 has two antenna connections one is for 1x/3g the other is for 4g only both use same type pigtale but need different antennas.
The pigtale terminates in a standard FME connector so your 3g antenna you already have will work
I think there is a firmware update for the cradlepoint to support the UML 290
I just click on internet sharing with the MAC BOOK and the airport inside it becomes a hot spot

Just be sure to get a 746-806 (Verizon) model as they are very tight antennas and do NOT work outside the band they are made for.
