I upgraded my Cradlepoint so I can use the Pantech and LG LTE adapters. I use one full time at home and the other when I travell into DC/No VA.

My speeds for 3g are pretty consistent at 2.12mb d/l and .65 u/l

My LTE speeds in DC/No Va vary but pretty much average out to about 12mb d/l and 2.5mb u/l

So for us non-literate teckie people, are you saying you are paying for 4G in ST. Mary's, but getting 3G connection with 3G downloading times?

Yes. 4G is limited, primarily to city areas. It will be a while yet before 4G is fully functional down here.

But because they travel to areas WITH 4G, they are willing to spring for the cost.

Thanks Hockynut.

Ummm Yes This area is not 4g ready yet but the big city's are.

Its like this if you have a 4g modem it will still connect to a 3g service and give you that speed.

When in the city you can use the 10x faster 4g service, as for springing for the extra cost of 4g well its cheeper.

3g Modem cost you 60$ a month for 5 gig,
4g Modem cost you 50$ a month for 5 gig or you can opt 10 gig at 80$ a month.

So the service is actually cheeper as long as you do not go over your limit.

I'm currently using Verizon's 3G service - I have a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 router and 2 different modems (a Novatel USB727 with an external antenna and a MiFi 2200). The 727 contract is up (so I'm month to month) and the MiFi is almost out of contract. I have both because 5G transfer/month was not enough for me. So I'm paying $120 a month for service. Sounds like once I'm out of contract on both - it may be wise (and cheaper) to switch to the 4G, even though the coverage isn't in this area.

For anyone using a Verizon 4G modem and a Cradlepoint, which model modem are you using - and does it allow for an external antenna hookup? What are your experiences with it? I've heard stories of some modems not properly downgrading to 3G.

Can you ping me now? Good
Using Verizon's Samsung 4G wifi hotspot

3G in County I'm averaging 1.5-1.7 down and 400-600 up

4G While at work in Silver Spring I average

18-20m down

5-7m up.

55-65ms latency.

Pretty impressed so far. Now if they could just increase the Caps!!!

I use the Pantech UML 290 usb modem on a Mac Book Pro

It has an external antenna and I use it when in fringe areas. You have to order the pigtale from verizon store or a third party "they dont stock it". The antenna for 4g cant be gotten from verizon as they dont make one. :smack:

The Frequency for 4g is 746 to 806 mhz ,this works so much better than 1900 mhz of 3g, it penetrates buildings much better and makes the long haul better.

I got my antenna from ZDA communications, its a 10 element yaggi beam and it really works the long distance. I had AJ at JEFA tech run an analyzer on it and the graph was very impressive with a steep attenuation of any and all out of band signals.

You could upgrade one of your 3g lines to the UML 290 modem with a 10 gig cap for 80$ a month and drop the other line this will save you 40$ a month. It will still work on the 3g service and when 4g comes to town you are already set. They say it will be everywhere in 2012.

The UML 290 has two antenna connections one is for 1x/3g the other is for 4g only both use same type pigtale but need different antennas.

The pigtale terminates in a standard FME connector so your 3g antenna you already have will work

I think there is a firmware update for the cradlepoint to support the UML 290

I just click on internet sharing with the MAC BOOK and the airport inside it becomes a hot spot

LTE Antenna | ZDA Communications

Just be sure to get a 746-806 (Verizon) model as they are very tight antennas and do NOT work outside the band they are made for.

Ouch...
Is that per day? because I hope to god thats not 10gig a MONTH!
Even 10gig a day would be bad for me. I couldnt even DL a game with a 10gig cap.

Yes its 10 Gig a month. 5 gig a month is more than plenty for most users but not for gamers or other heavy bandwidth uders.

You can surf all month 12 hours a day and never get close to 5 gig unless you are downstreeming videos, games and such.

4 hours of HD video and you are over limit.

Well it depends on how many people are using that connection and how many PCs you have also.
We have 4 desktops and 2 laptops on our network and between games movies and the like we use up bandwidth FAST. 7meg SUCKS when you share it with a few people.
