"Born in the USA" is actually derogatory toward America, and the "Born in the USA" refrain is delivered ironically.

Guy gets in trouble so they send him off to Vietnam to kill. He comes back and can't get a job, VA is no help. His brother dies in the war for no purpose ("they're still there, he's all gone"). The last verse describes the waste his life has become - "Ten years burnin' down the road, nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go..."

I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A. :ohwell:

Sorry to be a noodge, but it aggravates me when people choose songs based on the chorus and aren't really paying attention to the words or message.

I agree with you vrai-but that's the beauty of living in America! Freedom of speech and choice. :patriot:

You are right. It is just a song that has been played at every Independence Day function that I've ever been to.

Great. I'm just pointing out that it wouldn't qualify as a "patriotic" song.

thanks all for the suggestions. very helpful!

I'm also looking to include some of the less obvious songs. Stuff that is not necessarily the stereotypical Patriotic songs but that still evokes the sme typ of feeling. I'm probably going to include some stuff from the concert for new york city after 9-11.

any ideas along those lines?

I'll tell you what song I've always loved and thought of as all-American: "40 Hour Week" by Alabama.

There are people in this country who work hard every day.
Not for fame or fortune do they strive.
But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their pay.
And it's time a few of them were recognized.

Hello Detroit auto workers, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.
Hello Pittsburgh steel mill workers, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.

This is for the one who swings the hammer, driving home the nail.
Or the one behind the counter, ringing up the sale.
Or the one who fights the fires, the one who brings the mail.
For everyone who works behind the scenes.

You can see them every morning in the factories and the fields.
In the city streets and the quiet country towns.
Working together like spokes inside a wheel.
They keep this country turning around.

Hello Kansas wheat field farmer, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.
Hello West Virginia coal miner, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.

This one is for the one who drives the big rig, up and down the road.
Or the one out in the warehouse, bringing in the load.
Or the waitress, the mechanic, the policeman on patrol.
For everyone who works behind the scenes.
With a spirit you can't replace with no machine.

Hello, America,
Let me thank you for your time.
