"Their marriage demanded courage not required of most people in love.

But Lawrence and Lena Nelson accepted the challenge of interracial marriage and they've kept it together for 50 years.

"They couldn't cultivate a relationship, at least legally. Missouri didn't repeal its ban on interracial marriage until 1969, two years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the prohibition in a Virginia case."

Wow, I thought it was earlier than that, in Missouri at least.

So the government has a history of telling tax paying citizens who they can and cannot marry.
