Oswald shoots JFK, then a guy with strong ties to the Mafia shoots Oswald (to spare Jackie the pain of a trial, because yeah...that's a thing someone would do) (in front of a bunch of reporters, no less). If he'd said he was so incensed at this guy shooting his beloved president, I could see it, but his official excuse was just so much bullshit you wonder why he didn't work on it in advance.\

I remember it well that the news was reporting that initially. After a week or so, I quit paying attention so other excuses could have come out later, since I was a kid and the impact was kinda lost on me.
