7 Workstations

OK, I know this is not going to get much action this weekend. I'll bump it on Tuesday...

I have to purchase 7 workstations and 2 laptops. I normally do all of my purchasing from Gateway, however I have not been happy with Gateway on the last 2 purchases I made...

Who would you buy from and why?

Dell?

HP/Compaq?

or try Gateway again?

or someone else maybe?

Tell me your experiences...

Kernel panic: Aiee.......
If you're on a tight budget and already have the required software and licenses(if required), you can build the 7 workstations yourself fairly cheap. Of course you wouldn't have the support offered by Dell, etc. if you encounter problems. Most, if not all, problems can, and should, be handled by a competent IT staff. But if you prefer to go with pre-built, go with Dell

I personaly prefer home built over brand name PC's because they're generaly easier and cheaper to upgrade than replace the entire system.

As for the portables, I'd go with Dell or IBM. These two seem to be pretty rugged and handle heavy use well. I have first hand experience with the Dells. Alot of the old portables that I upgrade for NMCI are ~3 year old Dells that are still in decent condition. My sister has had an IBM portable the last year that is still in good condition. She pretty much destroyed the Gateway she had in less than 6 months. Mentioning Gateway, I'd stay away from Gateway. I have two "hand me downs" that are falling apart.....bad. These are about 3-4 years old. I have a generic P-133MHz portable that is in alot better shape than the Gateways.

Go to Dell !!

I bought a Dell 2 years ago after owning a Compaq and a Tandy (yes I had one). I have had no trouble with the CP at all. When I got the virus a few weeks ago I had to call tech support and had to wait on hold about 20 minutes but when the guy came on he stayed with me for over an hour and even called back the next day.

My parents have a POS Gateway. It is 2 1/2 years old and it is a turbo POS. It has had 3 modems, a monitor went bad and the CP is slower than crap. Everytime I go there I end up working on it for a couple hours because it is goofed up.
