ADDIS ABABA, April 24 (Reuters) - Unidentified gunmen attacked an oil field operated by a Chinese company in eastern Ethiopia on Tuesday and killed a "number of people", a Chinese embassy spokeswoman said.

"I can confirm a number of people were killed. They are Chinese and Ethiopian," said the spokeswoman, who asked not to be named. "Some Chinese people have also been kidnapped. I cannot confirm numbers at the moment."

China's Xinhua news agency, quoting a company official, said 65 Ethiopians and at least nine Chinese workers were killed.

The official said another seven Chinese workers were kidnapped by about 200 gunmen who raided the Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau site in Abole, a small town in western Ethiopia's Somali state, Xinhua said.

The Chinese news agency said the gunmen briefly took control of the working field after exchanging fire with more than 100 Ethiopian soldiers guarding the area.
