8 of 10 customers choose Windows 7, says PC builder

Given the choice, Puget Systems' customers ignore Windows 8 and buy Windows 7 machines instead

Computerworld - Given a choice, customers of a Pacific Northwest PC system builder overwhelming pick Windows 7 over the newer Windows 8, the company's president said Thursday.

"Windows 7 is known, it has years of solid reputation behind it, but Windows 8 has gotten a mixed reaction in the press and social media, and the lack of a Start menu is a hot-button issue among our customers," said Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, an Auburn, Wash. independent PC builder.

Puget Systems is no Dell or Hewlett-Packard, but instead sells high-performance, built-to-order PCs. The average price: $2,500 to $2,600, said Bach. Most are desktops.

Since Windows 8's launch, between 80% and 90% of the systems sold by Puget were pre-installed with the three-year-old Windows 7.

Ass-hole
I just got a new lap top with windows 8, not sure if I like the "apps" screen, I use it in desk top mode most of the time. Still think XP was one of the easiest ones to use.

I had read you could turn off the 'Metro' interface - ie go back to classic Windows .... like the last 5 OS since Win 2000

I can't blame them. I have one laptop running Win8 and hate it.

Just bought one with Win8 last week...and I'm astonished at how terrible it is!! It essentially makes my acquisition totally useless to me..worthless. And this even though I was well aware how dimly Win8 was being viewed by many others.

Now have to go to all the trouble to strip it and install Win7. Not a happy camper.

Before you do that, install a Start button application. Then you can use it just like Win7. I'm using Classic Shell:

Got Windows 7 and I like it. Won't go to 8 because of all the problems I hear others having with it.

I don't really see the issue people are having with windows 8. For the most part its exactly the same as windows 7. So the start button is now a start screen. It took a whole 5 minutes to learn.

There is one huge advantage with 8 over 7 though. Windows starts up and shuts down way faster with windows 8. This alone was enough for me to get it. Windows also now comes with its own virus scanner as part of windows defender which saves on having to deal with that.

So I really don't see what there is to dislike? Maybe its not worth buying due to the few changes, but I don't see why anyone would avoid it?
