Input: backyard mulching

What would be the good and bad to mulching our entire backyard?

Dimensions are approximately 72' x 40'

I'm tired of tending it and Nickel is not friends with the pushmower anymore.

Ideas, concerns, comments...

BAD

Mulch turns ugly within a month of putting it down due to drying and discoloration.

You will get splinters in odd places trying to play on mulch.

Insects. Lots of insects will make themselves quite a home in and under all that mulch.

High maintenance in that you will have to bring it in by the truck load yearly to keep it up to par.

You will have to remove the old mulch before you can put down the new mulch because mulch breaks down into a woody soil type composition over time and because you will increase the height of your yard by inches with each new layer you put down.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Oh yeah... termites.

crabcake

But wait, there's more...
You'll have a harder time spotting the puppy land mines when walking around ... that is, until you get back inside and notice the crap smears on the beige carpet. :ohwell:

Maybe you should consider a different type of grass. I'm having zoysia sod put down in two weeks in the front yard. I'm pretty sure -- once established -- it doesn't grow as tall as regular fescue grass. Maybe get some zoysia plugs and see how they work out and take over for next season.

Dustin/Nickel,

Day's parents are turning their backyard into an "outside" living room. They don't want the hassle of grass, so they've stoned-in (different kinds, colors, shapes, etc.) the backyard. It won't be finished for a while, but the beginning stages look absolutely beautiful! Try searching through a home/garden magazine at Lowes/Home Depot to get ideas. I'm sure there has to be a cheap solution out there!!

Like flagstone? My dad and stepmom are filling in their whole yard with pea gravel and different landscaping doo-dads. I would've never thought of that for myself, and definitely couldn't pull it off, but it looks great in their yard. My stepmpm is a decorating genius. :lmao: I like having grass back there, he's the one with the issues.

I'd have to look that up first to see what it is.

They have put down large stones (approximately 12X12) small ones, some chips of like gravel or something, but not ghetto, and have "concreited" (again, not ghetto) some of the yard. It's hard to describe, but it looks like something straight out of a home design catalog. Their entire house is gorgeous and decorated beautifully! I'll have to take pictures when they are done, and also of their sunroom and public bathroom. The entire house is just the cutest thing!!

I'd be happy with just extending our concrete patio with brick and calling it a day. I like having the grass out there so the boys can play without worrying about scraping themselves up on some rocks. :ohwell: Not to mention the residue dog crap would leave on it. :dead:
