It was a prop. A deactivated non working launcher. Anyone could buy one if you could find one. Completely harmless. Basically a display piece. Allthough im sure the dipshits at TSA soiled their pants for a bit.

That still has to be declared as a firearm and secured in a case with a lock that cannot be opened by TSA.

BowmanArms sells that kind of stuff by the thousands. RPG tubes, anti-tank missile launchers, deactivated mines of every type imaginable. Last year they sold out a batch of complete Sager kits...the entire package including intert(ed) missiles. None of the items are regulated in the slightest...mailed or shipped via normal methods.

I'm saving up for a surplus DDG to do a little fishing.

Another outfit I do business with on occasion - Armory Parts Exchange - had a bunch of demiled 105 wheeled howitzers they sold. Great lawn ornaments.

Does ATF classify it as a firearm?
Yes.

United States Code, Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 44, firearm definitions includes: any weapon (including a starter gun) which will, or is designed to, or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of any such weapon; any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; and any destructive device. As defined by 49 CFR 1540.5 a loaded firearm has a live round of ammunition, or any component thereof, in the chamber or cylinder or in a magazine inserted in the firearm.

Didn't see anything in there about inert ordnance.

Not that I'd ever trust the inspection of something like that launcher to some TSA rube. The demil procedures for some of those devices are fairly technical and/or subtle. I always ship stuff like that via UPS.

It was a demilled display piece. It IS NOT regulated in any way, shape or form anymore than an empty Law tube. Furthermore, this guy declared it at the check in counter but the airline failed to relay that little tidbit to TSA. Henceforth, when they figured it all out they let the guy go with no charges.

This guy was probably shaking his damn head the entire time in amazement at the sheer incompetence of everyone around him.
