I really feel for those people. One minute you have a nice home and a nice life, the next minute you're surrounded by rubble.

:frown: I would imagine the folks in LaPlata felt the same thing; only they aren't living in hurricane alley.

I lived in Panama City, Fl, for 4 years, and saw 2 out of 4 in the area come very close to us. The roar of the wind is something you don't forget soon.

And the way things that don't normally move on their own - get moved around by that wind - really makes your eyes get real big; you find yourself saying : "Oh, Sh!T!!!"

When Andrew went thru, we were able to send stuff down there to help them out. Anyone local doing any such thing this time?

Yeah, but it's only "things". I lost everything in 86 due to major floods. The railroad bridge took out our house. You quickly learn that things can be replaced. I feel bad for those who've lost family members. That's gotta be awful.

I believe they are requesting monetary donations. During Andrew they sent down truck loads of food which rotted due to an over abundance and not being able to distribute it quickly.

My mother lost her home and business in Charley. We are feeling his affects head on. Everything she had is now gone. She lives in Punta Gorda and felt the brunt of it. Its such a sad situation. I feel helpless here and I am not sure what I can do for her. I am just grateful she is alive. She was in her house when it happened.

 Maybe it's a dumb question, but what about home insurance, does it cover her loss?

Yes home insurance will cover it, however no one knows how long it will take to get adjusters in the area and to start building. The entire area was leveled. Image all of Waldorf, Calvert, and St. Marys being leveled. Thats what they are going through. Its just a waiting game at this point for help, however they still have bills to pay with no incomes b/c the businesses were destroyed.

I am sorry to hear that your mother lost everything. It is hard when you are so far away and can't really do anything. :frown: I donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund so I could at least do something to help.

I donated as well. Every little bit helps. I am hoping FEMA steps in soon and starts helping people monetary wise. There are so many people and families who only have the clothes on their backs and nothing else living in shelters. You know I would see situations like this on the news and think how sad, and just pass by it and move on. When it happens to someone you know and love it really makes you think of what's important and what's not.
