$93,000 cancer drug: How much is a life worth?

Very interesting question... :coffee:

$93,000 cancer drug: How much is a life worth? - Yahoo! News

The latest is Provenge, a first-of-a-kind therapy approved in April. It costs $93,000 a year and adds four months' survival, on average, for men with incurable prostate tumors. Bob Svensson is honest about why he got it: insurance paid.

"I would not spend that money," because the benefit doesn't seem worth it, says Svensson, 80, a former corporate finance officer from Bedford, Mass.

Guilty... I purposely withheld my opinion on doing any heroics on an 80 year old because I didn't want to confuse the topics at hand.
Even at my YOUNG age I wouldn't do it. I'd leave the money to my beneficiaries.

Are these cases where the person knows they are going to die for sure even with the drug.

I was the person dying my reaction would depend on the context. Am I am wealthy enough to pay for this myself. Do I have a family and using that money would leave them tight after my death or alternatively do I not have a family or I am sure they are fine financially after I die anyways. Am I paying this or is insurance paying for this. What is the quality of life during those four months. Probably based on that criteria I would ultimately make my decision.

This crap drives me to distraction.

The only reason this pill 'costs' $90k is because it was created and is being sold in a controlled, ie, NOT free market. Not remotely.

My gerber daisies would 'cost' $90,000 if I had state and federal protection of my market.
