A day for reflection more than celebration

I grew up in the era when many of our fathers, relatives, and their friends had just returned from the world's biggest war...and many never returned. In my lifetime we have never had a decade without some conflict that has sent our mothers, fathers, ourselves, or our children to serve in some foreign land where we still continue to lose so many. This is the day to honor those that have been lost and those that have survived but are still lost in so many other ways.

Yeah, when people say "Happy Memorial Day!" I have to resist the urge to give them a lecture....

It's nice to have a day to commemorate the men and women who died in service to their country, but I think many of us on here think about them frequently and not just one day a year. And others have no idea what Memorial Day even is.

I often get people thanking me for my service on Memorial Day and I have to remind them it is not a day to thank me but to honor those that we have lost.

Did you notice that the normally multi-colored Google banner is gray today. No red, white and blue, no flags...just gray google.

If you hover over the flag below it, it says "A moment of remembrance on Memorial Day". So I'm thinking the gray is their way to indicate that.

Dunno, just spitballin'..... Not that I want to stick up for Google, but it appears they're innocent this time.
