A delay with the MVA

Last month my insurance coverage lapsed. I went into the MVA just yesterday and asked them if I was fined anything, and they pulled up my information and told me that I had no fines.

Is there a delay between when your coverage ends and when the MVA institutes the fine? Or am I just lucky (wouldn't that be nice)?

Do you mean you were a day late paying, or your actual coverage had lapsed? With State Farm there's a good week at least of when the bill is due and when you're no longer covered.

If your policy lapses one day you are subject to a $150 fine. By law insurance companies must notify the MVA if your policy lapses. Call your insurance company and ask if your policy was just late or it actually lapsed. If it lapsed you will eventually get an FR-19 letter from the MVA. It sometimes takes them several months to get the letter out.

That's what I wanted to know. How long it would take for me to get the letter saying I've been fined.

Drive carefully. If you get stopped for any reason they will find out if you insurance has lapsed and I'm sure the fine would go up.

Could take a few weeks could take a year. I had someone call who went to renew their tags and couldnt because there was a lapse of insurance from 2 years ago.

I sold the car to my mom, and returned the plates. They're going to have to insure it and get their own plates, so I won't incur any more fines, and they won't get bombed for the insurance lapse.

If you sold the car and returned the plates, there should be no fine because the car is no longer yours. Did the insurance lapse before or after your sold the car? When was the car actually registered and titled under your Mom's name?

I had this happen to me. I purchased a 2010 vehicle in Feb and somehow 7 months later I get a letter from MVA stating my registration would be suspended in 7 days if I couldn't prove I had insurance for 1 day in Feb. I sent MVA all sorts of documents with dates of coverage and copies of my insurance card with new vehicle info on it. They sent letter back that wasn't proof enough and I then had 3 days to prove I had insurance 7 months ago for 1 day! Called USAA and they said no problem give us the case number; they went into MVA datadase and fixed it on the spot...

I didn't return the plates till after the coverage lapsed. And it wasn't in my mom's name then.

Here's the deal: I know I'm going to get fined, and I'm fine with that. I want to know when.
