Luke 24:36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Those of us who have gained a pound or two at times, giggle at the question in verse 41. The Son of God just brought Salvation to Earth and He's hungry! Actually, He did that so they would realize He was flesh and blood. How'd He do that? He's the Son of God. He knows how every molecule fits together to make the human body function. He was there while His Dad was creating the molecules that make up the human body.
I'm sure the human body would be starving after three days in that hole carved out of solid rock. On top of that, it must have taken that human some pretty miraculous feats to remove itself from that hole. It was solid rock. He couldn't scratch His way out of there in just three days. It would take years and years and years for the human hand to scratch stone away. It was a miracle! Miracles take energy. It had been three days and a couple of major miracles since the Passover Meal He shared with them. I bet that Human body was screaming for some food!
Actually, I do understand that He ate the broiled fish to prove He was no ghost. He was living breathing and quite human. Eating that broiled fish would be the same as revving an engine in a fine race car! He was good to go!
We're all practical people, we know they were planning to split up. Jesus was dead and they didn't want to lead a protest on their own. They were either going back to fishing or they were going back to join another movement. Pilate and Herod dashed their hopes when they had Jesus nailed to the Cross. They were going back to whatever they were doing before Jesus came along.
Jesus told them to stay in Jerusalem. They didn't own property in Jerusalem. They only had the Temple to go to. So that's where they went. They stayed in the sanctuary of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Chief Priests were the ones who plotted to put Jesus on the Cross. I wonder how that worked.
What a jokester Jesus was. Here they were talking about the fact Simon [Cleopas] was walking along the road and Jesus just showed up! Reminds me of when Hubby sneaks up on my blind side and says "boo". I jump and Hubby laughs. Can you imagine how the Eleven and the "others" jumped when they saw Him in the room!
I'm pretty sure the Eleven and "others" were meeting in a locked room. I mean, they were being hunted just because they were His inner circle. Jesus just appeared in the room with them. He didn't knock on the door. He didn't burst in. He didn't come in through the bathroom window. He just appeared.... in human form, hungry, and capable of eating broiled fish!
A ghost doesn't eat broiled fish!
