A good neurologist needed!

Restless

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good neurologist in the tri-county area? A friend's son is having horrendous migraines that are getting worse every time. He throws up, has excruciating pain, and sometimes is incoherent. He is 14 and their family doctor said he can see a neurologist that is for adults or kids. She called Children's Hospital because they have been impressed with the care there in the past. The soonest they could see him is in...April! That's nuts.

Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks so much!

Wow, I'm surprised the wait was so long. We only waited a few months. They had opened up more appointments there and added staff at that time.

A headache like you never had before

My wife a couple of years ago had terrible headaches out of the blue.

She went to the hospital three times before they caught she had a brain aneurysm.

A child hood friend of mine daughter complained about headaches she died of what they suspected was an aneurysm.

Georgetown Hospital is a city of angels healing the ill.

They have all the equipment and the surgeons.

I had an RN tell me years ago she was flabbergasted how effective a colonic was to alleviate and/or eliminate migraine headaches. I am in full support of that opinion whether others on here will laugh about it or not. I am sure it is not a laughing matter for the young man suffering.!
At least and for very little cost, I would have my child drink a half a jug of prune juice when he can stay close to a toilet. It won't hurt him/her in any fashion and may possibly give him/her some relief.
I am a fan(from experience) of what is called "detox" and the elimination of toxins accumulated in the human body from multiple sources. A major toxic source is the colon due to improper elimination and/or candida infestation resulting from overuse of antibiotics.
My prayers for this young man.

I see Dr. Abraham in Charlotte Hall and he is wonderful. I've suffered from severe migraines since I was 13 and am now 23. Never found a cause just seems to happen, they are thinking genetics. I've been receiving botox injections and haven't had a migraine in almost 2 years since I started.

I have suffered with migraines for years. With the symptoms you have described, are the symptoms I get with migraines. My migraines have gotten worse in the past two years. I have been on Imitrex for the past two decades, and they help tremendously The pain is gone in 30 minutes.

I went to a neurologist here in Charlotte Hall, and he said that there was nothing he could do...(You might want to check with one though, it never hurts to get an opinion.)

Good luck to your friend's son! Bottom line- there is no cure for migraines. You can only try to manage them...and unfortunately, they last a lifetime. I started having my migraines when I was a teenager, and I am 57 now.

(Migraines are life altering. I can't tell you how many times I could not function with just the normal things. As a matter of fact, I can't function at all when I have them! You can't eat, sleep, drive, or anything. I think people that don't get them, can't fully understand how serious they are...)

I disagree with Abraham. He seems to placate too much and throw various meds at me... we never got to root of problem. Then I saw one at John Hopkins and within weeks I underwent a needed brain surgery and we got to the root of my probem. However, NOW I have a meningioma (brain tumor (most are benign)) so it looks like I'll be back to seeing one. Other than those two options, I did see Floranda this year in Calvert for a severe concussion and bleeding on the brain... He seemed okay too!! :yay: My noggin's been through a lot

Your friends son needs to go up the road to Johns Hopkins or Georgetown!!

My hubby was recently in the local ER due to a terribly headache that he had on and off for 5 weeks. We went to see a local doctor the following day and he ordered an MRI and an MRA of his head and neck. The tests from St. Mary's Hospital showed a dissection in his carotid artery and a psuedoaneurysm. The doctor told us to go up the road to see a specialist and that if we couldn't find one to go to the Emergency Room. We went to Johns Hopkins Emergency Room and was in triage in less than 5 minutes and he was admitted. After additional testing at Johns Hopkins they also found a blood clot near the tear in his artery. The neurologist's and nurses up there are fantastic and they have access to far better testing equipment than anyone in Southern Maryland.

It might be a migraine- but it might not be.

Just fyi on John Hopkins' although they are top notch, its a known concept up there that there is no "return policy". I found this out after the brainsurgery, and durign it I did contracted a superbug (pseudomonis) in the ER and had to stay longer an a week in ICU. It complicated the recovery of the brain surgery. After a few weeks later, they sent me home and it was too soon. I had problems and had to be rushed to our local hospital and then local hospital wanted to medivac me back to JH as they were the ones that did the surgery. John Hopkisn refused and said its issues that should be competently treated by our local hospital.. this happened a few times when I had to be rushed to our local hospital. That's when the nurse at JH said there is an unspoken or unwritten "no return policy". Just my experience, but they are fantastic doctors. I just had bad luck I guess.

I am also a fan of the Botox injections! It's been about a year and half for mine- they have significantly reduced my headaches. I was having them nearly 3-4 times a week. Now I have them about once a month.
Never settle - if something isn't working; change it. If your doc isn't listening; change them too. It's taken me 30 years to get relief; but it's wonderful!!

My son is 12 and has nearly these same migraines (absent being incoherent) and has for 4-5 years. An MRI at Children's showed nothing organic, although he had "subtle abnormalities" with some of the tests the doctor did. They don't seem to be quite as bad when we hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. A boy of 14 is likely to be pretty active, and if he's not drinking adequate fluids (not soda and such) then perhaps that's hurting him.
Best of luck to your friend's son. It is awful to watch them suffer.

Dr. Kerasidis in Prince Frederick is excellent all around Neurologist. I go to him, my wife goes to Dr. Floranda who is in his practice. I recommend them highly.

Now moved to FL and desperately looking for Neuro's as good in The Villages.
