There's no denying the plot of director Ridley Scott's A Good Year is unoriginal, but the low level of uniqueness is more than compensated for by the sheer pleasure driving the film forward.

Based on author Peter Mayle's international bestseller, the film stars Russell Crowe as a cunning investment expert who, after learning his beloved uncle (Albert Finney) has died without a will, travels from London to Provence to visit the beautiful, if overgrown, vineyard he's inherited. Slowly, the women, wine, and Mediterranean sunshine transform him from a soulless, unloved miser into a warm-hearted individual able to appreciate the world he's let pass him by far too long.

Russell Crowe, who last collaborated with Ridley Scott on the Academy Award-winning Gladiator, is known, both in film and life, for his brusque manner and hard-edged intensity. Here, however, he reveals never-before-seen comedic talent and an appealing lighter side, delivering the type of performance one might expect from our generation's master of relaxed charm, George Clooney. Despite Crowe dominating this film, there is plenty of room left for a fine supporting cast to shine. The standout is Abbie Cornish, a rising star from Australia who sports a perfect American accent and oozes youthful playfulness as a young California woman who arrives at the vineyard with a surprising (and, to Crowe's character, troubling) claim.

And Ridley Scott, once again, shows incomparable directorial prowess. His photography, both of the cold, stone-and-glass London and the rustic, sunny Provence, is so gorgeous its jaw-dropping.

Overall, I can honestly say A Good Year is the most charming and heartwarming film of the year. I had a massive grin on my face throughout and left much happier than I was going in. It was a stellar feeling and I recommend Ridley Scott's latest masterpiece beause of it.
