I'd love to get a hampster but if the cats didn't get him, or scare him to death, my 2 year old probably would.

Hampters are no problem even with cats around. You just get one of those plastic houses with tunnels all over your living room for them to roam, and the cats just sit and watch hoping for something to break. Just don't get a male and female pair because they are close relatives to rabbits as far as reproducing goes. I had so many I was giving them away to neighborhood kids without asking their parents some years ago.

Hamsters are just a step up from rats or mice. They are very easy to take care of and can be very friendly. My favorite one was a long hair that I lost in the living room so I pulled out the sofa, saw nothing, pushed it back and squished it. The only time I found them unfriendly was if they were protecting their babies, and she would bite the crap out of your finger. Otherwise they are perfect pets.

Do you take them home right away?
I would assume so, since you won't have to wait for a spay/neuter appt and healing time as w/ a dog/cat.
The # at the shelter is 301-932-1713 if you'd like to speak to them directly. I thought the girl was gonna choke on her soda when I asked if they neuter hamsters.
