A little help with a 2 stroke dirtbike motor...

Do I smell Burning Rubber
I have a 2002 Honda CR-80 big wheel. I can't seem to get it to the point that it will start consistently. I have tried everything I know and learned a few things along the way. I have been able to get it started now and again, but it seems to only want to start when it's cold. I am looking for a fellow gear head that knows a little about tuning 2 strokes and can help me get it going good. it seems to wet foul the plugs a lot so it may be too much oil in the gas, when i did get it started, I couldn't have the choke on and it was bogging down at the top end.

I have cleaned the carbs, adjusted the float bowls (probably could use some more adjustment), I am stumped.

I can help with motorcycle stuff in return.

Is the choke opening all the way? Sounds like it's running rich, but I'm sure you've figured that out.

You sure the choke is opening all the way? Sounds like its running rich, but I'm sure you've figured that out.

BS Gal is going to be upset that you are :otter: at 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon while she's away.

I tried with the choke open and closed. Since the last time I pulled the carbs, it seems to only want to start and run with the choke closed (off). I believe it's too rich as well, I keep having to mess with the idle screw and the air screw. It's jetted like it is supposed to.

These are all the adjustments I need to get into Harmony

Idle screw - which is basically a horizontal post with the end rounded which pushes on a tapered slot moving the carb piston up and down.
Air screw - lets in air to mix with the fuel (between 2 and 3 turns out)
Float bowl level - i think this could be an important part of the problem. If it's too high (im not sure what happens) and if it is too low, there is no fuel.
Throttle cable adjuster at the top of the carb
Fuel/Oil Mix ratio 32:1
It has a dirty Air filter, but that shouldn't keep it from starting?
I am running BR9ES plugs (Only think I could get at autozone)

The issues with the idle circuit and The wide open problem use different jets of the carb but because the carb piston does not use engine vacuum adjustments in idle also effect the depth of the jet needle they are most likely linked.

1. Start with the easiest- Fuel mixture
2. spark plug
3. Idle

this thing has been a PITA for months now!

Check for obstructions in the air path/filter. I had a similar problem with a suki 125RM. Turns out someone stuffed a cleaning rag in what they thought was a storage canister. It was actually the pre-chamber to the air filter. Take the air filter out and try to run it.

Thanks for the tip, but tried that one too:tantrum

:lmao:That wasn't it, though. My internet has been up and down and when I sent it the first time it didn't seem to go through. That's my story anyway.

See, it happened again!:lmao:

Anyway, what I mean is when you open the choke is the butterfly valve actually opening all the way? I had a two cycle, two cyclinder Yamaha that one of the butterflies got out of adjustment on. Took me a long time to figure that out.

This is around slide carb, it doesn't have butterflies. I checked the float level again and it might have been off. Then when I was pulling the plug, the cap came off the coil wire. I checked for spark again, it will spark just fine from the coil without the cap, but I can't get spark with the cap on. The high voltage lead resistance is a little low, but I clipped off a little of the length to try to get a better connection. I don't have a peak voltage meter to check the specks. I think I just need to get a new coil, because the plug cap is new, the CDI is new and it sparks well without the cap. probably the problem all along:doh::stupid:

I wish I saw this earlier; I us to race 2 strokes for over 20 years.

Let me know how it goes for you... just PM me. :yay:
