A little intimidated

We contacted the SMAWL about some puppies on their website, but I am a little daunted by the application/approval process. Does anyone know if not having an adult at home during the day (I work 9-3) will disqualify us from dog ownership?

I really don't want to get my kids hopes up if the odds are against us being approved.

BTW, we do have a fenced yard so the dog wouldn't be tied during the day.

I didn't deal with SMAWL, but I had the same thing happen with two other adoption groups. I tried to go the adoption route to "rescue" a 2nd schnauzer and one of the marks against us was that someone wasn't home during the day. Another mark against us was that I had young children... they were 7 and 9 at the time... I was completely put off by them and ended up finding a schnauzer that needed a home via SOMD.COM classifieds.

I don't know if I'm reading something into your post or not. Do you plan to leave the dog outside unattended during the day? Most rescues won't go for that.

That didn't make a difference for me. Mine was to be a house dog, but they disapproved of the fact that the dog would be home alone during the week days.

I was never turned down by a rescue for that. There were certain dogs that they would not adopt to a home where there wasn't anybody home. The dogs had separation anxiety, etc. I've found it to be on a case-by-case basis. Most rescues operate that way.

I was stunned by it. I called wanting to do a "breed specific" adoption and didn't have any one dog in mind at the time. I am a firm believer in meeting a dog and checking for personality compatibility before taking a dog home. Schnauzers do very well on their own during the day. In fact, that is one of the advantages of the breed. Having a schnauzer of my one, I understood them asking questions about my kids because schnauzers don't tolerate the very young unless they've grown up with them. The two different people I talked to both had issue with not having someone at home during the day. One had the kids as a 2nd issue... the other had the fact that my yard wasn't fenced in as a 2nd issue. As I have stated in the past, I don't mind the questions and interview process. I did mind the tone and attitude. I decided not to even deal with them and found a dog on my own.

No. The dog will be an inside pet.

You should get in touch with Katie. She posts on here and is a volunteer for SMAWL. Maybe she can answer your questions.

Try it and see. The alternative is to tell them to pack sand with their approval crap, they can gas their dogs for all you care, then go get a pet through a breeder or off the classifieds where you're not going to be treated like a paroled criminal just because you want a dog.

Well, I do agree with aproval, but that seems a bit too much.

Hey there! We adopted from SMAWL near the end of the summer, and I agree - the process is definitely extensive. However, they didn't have any issues with us not being at home during the day. Once they are okay with your application, you go to the foster home of the animal with your family and visit. If all goes well at that meeting, they usually bring the dog to your home for inspection/drop off. The inspection wasn't a huge big deal - she just looked around to see our home, our yard, etc... Ya know, just to make sure we had what we said we had when we filled out our application. She looked around our house and all was well, and she left - obviously leaving our pooch with us.

Finally, someone who understands me...:bawl:

Seriously, AB... what is your next step with them? Are they going to call you back?

We have to show up at Petco next Saturday for 'adoption day' and drop off our application. Then they will 'get back to us' after they review all the applications. She made sure to tell me it wasn't first come, first served but they would rank the applications. And then if we were 'acceptable' they would call us for an interview.

If the dogs weren't so darn cute (husky mixes just like our recently departed :bawl: ) I'd skip it. Heck, I'm half tempted to anyway.

Well then, going back to your original question... I don't think I'd be getting the kid's hope up at this point in the game. Did you check SOMD classified for pups? There are accidental litters happening all the time. (Just ask Jazz...)

HHmmm, that's different than what we did. I saw the dog online, submitted the application online, etc... - but all of it was online until we set up the meetings w/the dog.

Howdy..

The approval process is set up this way for a reason. I volunteer with SMAWL, and can tell you that we have had dogs come back to us several times for various reasons. The reason SMAWL goes through these steps is we NEVER turn a dog away when it is returned. They go back into the foster program.

I will be there on Saturday with my foster dog Petey. Well my hubby might be there, I probably will be writing a paper.

They won't have an issue with you working during the day. Just as long as the puppy is an inside dog.

Thanks :) So, how long does the approval process take? If I submit my application on Saturday (I downloaded it from the website and have it filled out) how long until someone calls me about meeting the dog with my family?

It really depends. I have seen them done real fast, and then some take a couple of days.

If you have an animal already, put the vet on that you use. They like that for a reference, vets are honest.
