Haiti...within a 25 year span, their forest dwindled to less than 4% and thus,...when the Hurricanes visit, erosion strips the lingering topsoil. Misery multiplied.
Lesson?
We are about to see
a) More illegal dumping...because people can't pay trash pick up, and there are empty dead ends & ravines just eager for the old couch & mattress.
b) More Poaching...because people want meat but cannot afford 5.99/lb 80% ground beef.
c) More netting & illegal trapping of crabs (quite scarce anyway), and fishing violations in size & gender.
d) More wood burning because we can't afford 5.40 /gal of heating oil.
e) Farmers skimping on soil conservation techniques...as well as fertilizer because of costs....could lead to lower yields though.
