When I was sailing into Key West in 92? maybe in march / april one of the Navys Hydrofoils past me and it was cranking up the speed and poof it was gone.
A few hours later I was sitting in Malory Square and it was being towed back in. Word was that they thought they had hit a whale.

That was toward the end of the joint deployment of the PHM hydrofoils and the USCG surface effect ships (WSES) to Key West, for drug and Haitian interdiction. The coasties derisively referred to the PHMs as standing for "Permanently Here Moored". The Navy guys responded with the USCG cutters as 'We're Seldom Ever Seen". All the banter aside, both types had excellent interdiction records. Those were some fun times.
