Public school systems around the state, including Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), have been closed since March 16 in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented public health crisis in modern-day United States.
CCPS has implemented several measures to ensure students are staying connected to school and receiving meals. Mental health resources are available for parents to help them support the social, emotional and behavioral development of their children amid this pandemic. CCPS has an Employee Assistance Program for staff who might need services such as counseling and resources.
Instruction
Instructional materials have been available since Saturday, March 14 and are easily accessible on the front of ccboe.com. For students who don’t have internet access, paper packets were available for pick up at eight meal sites.
The work in the packets is not for a grade, but is an enrichment tool to keep young minds engaged. CCPS staff is working on distance learning options for students if the state expands the school closure.
Meal sites
There are eight meal sites in Charles County, with the possibility of more locations being added. The sites are open 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday where children 18 and younger can get three meals — two bagged meals for lunch and dinner, and a breakfast pack. As of March 20, the sites are:
· Henry E. Lackey High School;
· Maurice J. McDonough High School;
· St. Charles High School;
· Westlake High School;
· Milton M. Somers Middle School;
· Indian Head Elementary School;
· Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School; and
· J.P. Ryon Elementary School.
Three additional meal sites will be open Tuesday, March 24 at Dr. Samuel A. Mudd and J.C. Parks elementary schools, and Piccowaxen Middle School.
Meal assistance is available through other partner agencies in Charles County, including the Metropolitan United Methodist Church and the Charles County Children’s Aid Society. Victory Christian Ministries International will hold a food distribution 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or until all the food has been distributed) Saturday, March 21 at 4415 Crain Highway in White Plains. Food will be distributed until it runs out. Organizers ask guests to bring their own reusable shopping bag.
Mental health
Parents and guardians can get mental health resources at ccboe.com. School psychologists are available by phone 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday to talk with parents about their children’s social, emotional and behavioral development. Call 240-776-5802.
Callers seeking specific mental health guidance should call Tri-County Youth Services Bureau at 301-645-1837 or email info@tcysb.org. Parents can also contact their child’s current mental health provider for assistance.
CCPS staff members in need of additional supports during the closure can the EAP hotline or online. There are additional mental health resources at ccboe.com. CCPS partner agencies and the Maryland Health Connection are Tri-County Youth Services Bureau, Department of Social Services, Maryland Health Connection and Maryland Health Connection family resources.

Schools and office building will be closed with essential employees teleworking March 23 to 27. CCPS staff is available via an online help desk to answer general questions and those about technology. Find the AskCCPS button under the slideshow on ccboe.com. Guests will be asked to fill out an online form to submit their questions. There is also a frequently asked question option for people seeking answers quickly.
