What is the best exercise for them?

Ab crunches are the best. Perform straight up crunches and oblique (side) crunches. These are simple exercises with the least risk of injury. If you need more, look at crunches with more range of movement. But only when you are ready.

Also, when doing any other physical activity, actively "turn on" your abs.

This won't make your stomach smaller, but will strengthen your core.

I heard that planks - from yoga - are really good for abs. I started doing them last year and I can feel and see a difference.
