Amy Wax barred from teaching mandatory first-year class at Penn law
Buried in another thread awhile back I posted a link to an Imprimis article by Professor Amy Wax (UPenn) where she wondered Are We Free to Discuss America’s Real Problems?
Well, apparently, not. This extraordinarily gifted legal mind and long-time university law school professor has been suspended from teaching first-year law because she stated (within the general context of some ideas she and a colleague put forth last summer, Paying the price for breakdown of the country's bourgeois culture) that, "I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black student graduate in the top quarter of the class and rarely, rarely in the top half.”
For that, Wax has been accused of being a white supremacist. But instead of UPenn supporting an esteemed member of its faculty, not only did the university fail to directly refute her statement it chose to "double down" and back a petition that said she had made "false and deeply offensive claims" (thereby endorsing, if only obliquely, the accusation of racism) while at the same time making the statement that her comments violated students' rights to keep their grades confidential! (I wonder why UPenn's reply, however, did not?)
This is just another example of (higher) education being more in the business of politics and indoctrination than actually teaching, challenging, and helping in the process of producing informed and civically knowledgeable young citizens.
Incredible. We are past snowflakes. This is a giant iceberg.
