Access External Hard Drive through router

I purchased a Linksys EA6500 Smart Wi-Fi Dual-Band AC Router with Gigabit and 2x USB - and then got myself a WD Passport Ultra - with the hope to access the hard drive through the router. Well it isn't working. The error I get when I attach the hard drive to the router is Unsupported Storage - Unsupported formatting or drive mapping on attached device - which, when I click 'Learn More' goes on to say Formatting for one or more partitions or drive mapping on your device are incompatible with your router. Supported formats FAT, FAT32, NTFS and HFS+. Supported drive mappings: GUID Partition Table (GPT) and Master Boot Record (MBP). Google shows me that people have married these two before. I haven't done much on the hard drive - although I believe I backed up a computer to it. It is not the most user friendly of external drives but it does seem secure. Any thoughts or help? Many thanks!

connect the passport to your computer, delete all partitions, reformat the drive NTFS ... [or you will be limited to a max file size of 4 gb]

Thank you for the input - but still not working. I formatted the drive to NTFS. I can access it just fine from my computer - but when I attach it to the network it says it is unsupported. Ugh, I really thought this was going to be plug and pray! Thanks for any more guidance.
