It makes no difference who has the right of way when you come around a bend on a back country road and a bicyclist is in your lane. You could possibly have to make a split second decision...do I hit the oncoming car or do I hit the bicyclist.

They have absolutley no right being on a road without shoulder or on main highways (unless of course, they can keep up with the posted speed limit). Laws should be in place stating as such.

It takes a certain amount of arrogance (or stupidity) to think that you deserve the same right of way as a car that is traveling at 55+ mph.
Democrat much?

The back roads without shoulders would be safe if people in cars didn't do 70 MOH when the speed limit is 35.. A person on a bike SHOULD be safe on ANY road where the speed limit is 35 - 45, if the loons behind the wheel of the cars paid attention, put the cell phone and big mac down until they got to where they were going.

It should NOT be illegal to ride a bike (especially an adult rider) anywhere that you mention. Whether it be safe or not for the rider, it would be up to the rider (as an adult) to weigh the risks and determine if he or she wants to ride where-ever they chose to ride. I might agree with the Solomons bridge ONLY because to get by a bike rider you have to travel into oncoming traffic.. but back roads, RTE 4, 235.. 301.. ride away until your heart's content.

I'd say you are the arrogant (or stupid) one in this thread.

How sad..wonder how long she'd been here. I'll bet she didn't realize the southbound 4 traffic doesn't stop at that intersection. :frown:
I think you're probably right about that. It's sort of an unusual intersection if you're not from the area. I feel so sorry for everyone involved - the driver of the vehicle and his son, as well as the victim. If she was part of a travelling nurse program, I wonder if she was here in somd all alone? I hope not. What a tragedy.

The victim obviously knew enough to walk the bike across the highway, unfortunately, it seems as though she misjudged oncoming traffic. Personally, you wouldn't find me walking or biking along Rte. 4.

Prayers to the family.

Don't hold back...say what you REALLY feel!:lmao: I agree....bicyclists shoud not be riding on main highways OR back country roads, especially roads without a shoulder. I have seen idiots riding down roads with wide shoulders (plenty of room for them) and they STILL ride ON or very close to the white line.

All in all, I still feel sorry for the family of the person hit. Why in the world woudl someone be riding a bike on Rte. 4 during rush hour? I have seen kids on bikes and I want to wring their parents necks!
There are a lot of ignorant bicyclists out there. They don't realize that they too have to follow the same rules as cars. When ever I ride my bike I get out of the road for the cars. A bike can go in the grass or gravel better than a car going off the road.
:love:Here's info from bicyclesafe.com

On very fast roads cars have less time to see you because they're approaching so fast. Of course, you should avoid fast roads in the first place if at all possible, unless there's plenty of room for a car and a bike side by side. And if there IS such room, then on fast roadways, you can practice invisibility by riding to the extreme right. If you're far enough right that you're not in the part of the lane the cars are in, then they'll zoom by and won't hit you, even if they never saw you.

WTF?!

I drive carefully and expect to see something that may be odd other than just cars.

Okay you guys already talk about bicyclist..

What about farm tractor operators?

What about herd drivers?

what about amish buggies?

What about hikers?

what about surveyors?

what about a really oversize/overload trailer moving slowly oncoming and you can't squeeze your car through?

You hav got to be kidding me. Maybe we shoudl just post the speed limit on all roads to 5 MPH to protect the idiots that choose to put themselves and others at risk by traveling on roads posted with 55PMH speed limits without safeguarding themselves.

Bicyclist killed on Rt 4 - CalvertNews.info - Calvert County MD News & Information

I am sure that the man and child were not expecting a bicyclist to jump out in front of them while they were in a 55 mph zone. I would think that a car, tractor, Amish buggy, etc. would be a little more noticable than a bicyclist.

Tractors...the ones that I see have flashing lights and a reflective triangle.

Surveyors....don't they normally post those BIG ORANGE signs warning drivers that they are there?

Common sense has to fall into place at some point. If you can't keep up with the flow of traffic, stay on the shoulder or stay out of the roadway. There are no crosswalk on route 4 that I am aware of. It's because you shoudl not be crossing it on foot or bike.

What about farm tractor operators? They stay as far to the side as possible, when approaching you pass if it is safe, otherwise you wait.

What about herd drivers? ??

what about amish buggies? They obey all the laws and stay far to the side.

What about hikers? They are capable of hiking out of the road.

what about surveyors? They put out signs and have brightly colored clothes.

what about a really oversize/overload trailer moving slowly oncoming and you can't squeeze your car through? They are responsible for their load.
I didn't say all cyclists. Many are completely aware of their surroundings and follow all the laws but there are a lot out there who don't pay attention and expect cars to look out for them.

We will never know why this woman thought it was fine to start crossing the street. It is anyones guess.

Hell, I have biked for 10 years in the ranch club and never come close to being hit. If you pay attention and get out of the way of motorists you will not have a problem. They are driving at speed.

Nope. The bridge is wider than it seems. You can get three wide on there. I know because I saw a cop do it.

What a jerk.

She probably had no idea that the south lane didn't have the light.
Like she had that kind of crazy light/intersection set up back in Ohio.
My cousin is a visiting nurse and travels all over....and it is so sad that this woman, this nurse had to die in such a horrific fashion.

I always keep and eye out for any traffic hazards as I drive.
But I guess tis guy was not watching the road all that well as he came down the hill......

WTF, it sounds like the driver was not at fault going by what the eye witnesses said. How do you know he was not watching the road well?

Seriously Ink what is your issue with the nurse. When you compare it to a child, while yes both are tragic, but the nurse more or less is human error on the part of the deceased. A child drowing is no comparison.

Say what?

Tell that to her family that her death is less than a child..
Both are human error....both could have been prevented.
My issue? The cost and value of a human life...no matter who it is or what age or gender or race...
And the fact the news pick and chooses who is important and who is not.
The 2 yo is nothing,...just a life form that does nothing to contribute to the great good..Just eats, poops and sleeps and can not even discuss the local weather!!! ( that is said with humor)
The 56 yo..a nurse, from Ohio..a life well lived, had a lot in that dash between 1952-2008...and no one to morn her..No comments about who she was or anything....pretty sad...that a visitor from out of state, dies on our roads and she is not important enough to deserve a mention on the local news...

A 56 yo woman is dead and so is a 2 yo child....what is the difference?

Pity you who believe the 56yo death is "More or Less" human error...
Hope no one tells you that when death knocks on your door.

Pity you who believe the 2 yo did not die becasue of human error too. Guess the kid should have known better than to go into the pool.

Go read Dylan Thomas....and them come back and tell me this womans death is less than the 2 yo kid.

Hey BOB.....***hole much? What does this thread have to do with my political preference? It is awfully arrogant (AND stupid) of you to ASSUME that you know my political affiliation. You are an ass.

What, in your educated opiniopn, do you think Mr. Evans was doing when he hit this woman, eating a Big Mac or talking on his cell phone? This accident was horrible for all involved. It was unfortunate that she was hit and unfortuante that Mr. Evans and his son had to be traumatized by the incident.

It should not be totally up to the rider to determine where he or she wishes to ride if it puts others at risk. You said it yourself...people should not be able to ride on Solomons bridge "because to get by a bike rider you have to travel into oncoming traffic". How is this any different from a back road WITHOUT shoulders?

You say "Whether it be safe or not for the rider, it would be up to the rider (as an adult) to weigh the risks" . Why should it be up to the rider if he is putting others at risk? There is a reasonw hy it is illegal to walk and ride a bike on the beltway...why do you suppose that is so?
