Accident

I think I'm just tired of people taking these treads and, instead of showing sympathy, arguing and pointing fingers......

I wasn't pointing fingers at all. I do not think anyone was at intentionally at fault. It was what is was...an accident.

I just think it might have been avoided if it were not legal to ride a bike on a highway with a posted speed of 55MPH.

It is extremely unfortunate for all that were involved....the deceased, her family, Mr. Evans and his son, and on and on. My heart goes out to ALL that were involved.

I drive carefully and expect to see something that may be odd other than just cars.

Okay you guys already talk about bicyclist..

What about farm tractor operators? A large reflective triangle required on the rear
What about herd drivers?

what about amish buggies? A large reflective triangle required on the rear

What about hikers?

what about surveyors? reflectivevests required

what about a really oversize/overload trailer moving slowly oncoming and you can't squeeze your car through? A large reflective triangle required on the rear
I'm seeing a pattern.
One type of slow vehicle is not required to display a significant amout of reflective material. Even motorcyclists, that can maintain speed in the traffic flow, are required to wear reflective vests on base.

I just wanted to make one comment. If bikes follow the laws of the roads, using intersections the correct way (they must use them just a a car would)....accidents and near misses would be less likely to happen.

I am all for sharing the road with bikers and bicyclists. I was taken back at people saying that bicyclists should not be on the "fast back roads". That's all.

This morning I was driving southbound on Rt 2 going through the traffic light onto Rt 4 southbound. I saw the guy (Indian guy from 7-11?) on the motorized scooter stopped on the cement divider, look back for any oncoming traffic, and then proceed to cross two lanes to the shoulder lane while cars were merging onto the left lane (rt4) from the left merging lane (coming from rt2). That scenario got me thinking about that recent accident.

What do you say about motorized scooter? They don't go as fast as motorcycles or slow as bicyclist.

Why don't you say that three times in front of Dave Lane:buttkick:, owner of Pax Bike & Kayak store. :sarcasm:

Why don't you jump on your bike, merge on into the fast lane on Rte 4, and I will meet you there. You can introduce me!

If you are in St. Mary's come right on across that bridge. It is perfectly safe for you and all of the motorists!:loser:

Don't have my bike anymore but .. I can ask my police friend to ride his police mountain bike and meet you there.

The problem with this thread (well, one of them) is that there are 2 seperate issues discussed as if they are the same. It seems that this person wasn't riding on the highway, just trying to cross it. Entirely different, IMO.

i have looked everywhere about the child drowning i dont see where he didnt make it? and imho a death is tragic no matter what the age prayers to the friends and family of all involved!
It was posted in the other thread(on the 2 Y.O.) that Jeff either deleted or put in private because of Inkpen's and a couple other's comments.

I think you are right, I believe she was probably just crossing the highway.

Pure speculation here............She was crossing the highway, probably heading to the shoulder of the road so that she could get back on her bike and start riding again.

None of which she would have been doing if it were not legal to ride on highways with 55 mph speed limits.

This accident aside, (because I do realize this thread has broken into differnet issues) I don't understand the reason why it is not illegal to ride bikes on 55MPH highways?

This is an honest question here, why is is illegal to ride on the beltway? Same speed limit, isn't it? I fail to see the difference. OK, there are more lanes on the beltway. Is that the reason?

Because everything can't and shouldn't be controlled by a nanny state. People know the risks and as long as they are adults they should be allowed to take certain amount of them.

It is like seat belt laws, to me, I would like to be able to ride around without my seatbelt on IF I wanted. Of course I wouldn't but lets leave a little natural selection in the world.

Kids on the other hand that don't have a choice in the matter, well I have no problem creating laws protecting them.

I have ridden my bike on Rte 4 on the shoulder and not got hit. Sure the cars are flying past me, and I have a *BLINKING* red light and a neon yellow vest letting them know that I am there. I also have a rearview mirror attached to my helmet so I know who is behind me. I also know the lights, and the intersections that I wouldn't cross.

I have ridden on 235 in the joke of a bike lane with the same precautions. The bike lane is marked as a bike lane. There are zero back roads for me to get to a safer road. I could ride down Chancellor's Run road, and risk my life more. People go into the bike lane all the time because they are not paying attention.

I won't ride over the Solomon's bridge because I do value my life as it is the only one I have.

I wish that there were more bike paths like in VA, and other parts of MD, but there isn't. I am not going to sit on my couch and get fat just because you don't think I should be on the road.

I follow the rules of traffic. If there is a red light I stop for that light. Stop sign I stop.

Kudos to you for wearing highly visible markers. I am sure it makes it much easier for vehicles to see you when you are on the roads.

I did not say that you should not be on the road, I just said that you should not be on certain roads...such as roads without shoulders (so that people can swerve, if necessary, to avoid you should they come upon you unexpectedly). This situation would be similar to the bridge, you know....too narrow to swerve.....same principal here.

Why would you feel at risk on the bridge yet not on a winding back road without a shoulder?

I do feel at risk on the winding back road. Sixes Rd in Calvert I will not ride on. It gives me the chills just thinking about. I also can bail a lot quicker on a back road, than on the bridge. If I bail on the bridge, I will go swimming. If I bail on a back road I will eat gravel. Big difference.

Since they can stop, thay go as slow as a bicyclist. 49cc moped/scooters have a top speed of 25-30 mph and they are required to follow the same rules as a bicycle and a car
Scooters over 50cc require a "M" endorsement on your liscense and are considered motorcycles.

Interstate are limited access highways with minimum speed limits.
