Acer Aspire laptop - stopped working

So I'm in the middle of playing a round of NASCAR SimRacing when it just stops. I'm sitting there waiting for it, then I three finger salute it. So, it does nothing.

After 5 attempts to boot into Windows, it finally did so and then rebooted on its own. In safe mode looking at event viewer, and it just says "Fatal system error."

This won't help you one bit but I had an Acer laptop and it was junk. Don't think I had it a year and I went out and picked up a Toshiba to take its place. Acer = t3h sux.

If you have a few thousand dollars to spare thats a great idea. I designed a computer on their site that was $15,000.00

:smack: Nobody said you had to be greedy!

I'm not spending 1,000$+ on a laptop.

It's working now. A memory swap, a few changes in the BIOS, a defrag and about 4 hours of time, as well as the deletion of Windows XP "Home Edition."

Acer's largest problems stem from their bios, and how easily corrupted the RAM can become.

As for Toshiba, they've actually come out with a few new laptops that are pretty sweet in the past few months. I wouldn't mind dropping 8 to 9 hundred on one if I had the money.

Alienwares aren't worth the money anymore that they're owned by Dell. They were really good a few years back, but the second they got bought out, the hardware became awful. Shotty motherboards, Ram that runs too hot, and some of the worst set ups I've ever seen when it comes to overheating. You want a good gaming laptop or PC, go with www.falcon-nw.com Yeah they're high priced and not cheap, but definitely worth it when you look at the workmanship that goes into them.

If you want a good solid laptop right now that you don't have to specialty order, HPs are the way to go.

Where were you when I bought this POS XPS from Dell???? I sure coulda used a good ear and opinion about a year ago. I have had NOTHING but trouble with this thing from about the time it turned 6 months old! They refuse to replace the laptop, they just keep sending me parts and fixing things. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Oh well, you know what they say about hindsight! Never will I buy another Dell. I was singing their praises not too long ago. Because up until I bought this POS I have two other Dells that are excellent and never give me any trouble. Ok, I'll stop whining now. :lmao:

About five years ago, Dell WAS a really good company to go to. You were paying for their support and their service plans and the like. Dunno what happened to them since, but they just slowly fell apart. Besides, I never did like a company that puts out machines that have certain parts that will ONLY work with their own hardware. It's a scam to lock customers in and not give them much of a way out.

The next time you have a problem with your laptop, let me know. I'll send you some contact info in a private message so you can keep in contact with me.

Also... I know this is going to sound like a really bad promotion for my work, but I'm a computer technician with Staples in California, MD on 235. We have a couple laptops on clearance... everything from a few compaqs to I think... if we haven't sold them yet, we may have a few HPs.

AND... look into your warranty through dell. You may be able to just return the thing and get your money back. Unless they stopped doing that whole satisfaction garaunteed thing... Oh... and just FYI... dont go gateway either. ;)

Unfortunately, I just sank 4 grand into this laptop a yr. ago. I won't be getting a new one anytime soon. :ohwell: I have threatened them with a lawyer, and even called a few lawyers, and not one of them called me back. Dell didn't even flinch. I think I am stuck with this thing. I dare not even approach the subject of a new laptop with my husband. He would kill me and he's not a violent person! I would greatly appreciate any help you want to offer. I keep having to reformat the machine because of this problem or that problem. I am so DONE with Dell they could stick a fork in me! :lmao:

I've had excellent luck with DELL. I'll probably buy my next computer from them.

Gateway/eMachines are the worst things I've ever used.

I have two DELLs at home. Work great. :yay:

I won't buy from HP. I have an HP/Compaq desktop - but it's mostly custom. As far as memory, I replaced the memory in my Acer shortly after I bought it. I alwayus replace RAM and stuff, because they never give me enough and the latency on the RAM is too slow.

Toshiba's decent but their DVD drives are bigtime problems. I've replaced the drive on my dad's Toshiba three or four times. We're not replacing it again - I'm just gonna give him my laptop when I get a new one.

That's the thing, I had excellent luck with them too. It took me buying one of their most expensive machines for my luck to run out. :ohwell: What can you do, I will never buy from them again, and HP is OUT of the question. SO I guess I'm screwed!

Get a Mac. You can put Windows on a Mac, on a dual partition with their newer line.

IBM laptops are pretty solid as well, as are the Panasonic Toughbooks.
