Acre Measurement App

I'm looking for an app for my iPhone that will measure acres. Any ideas? I would like to be able to walk or drive the perimeter of a field and mark the corners on my phone and have it calculate how many acres are in the field. I saw this one, Geo Measure, but reviews and description are not enough to warrant spending the money for the app. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Really?

You need an app to multiply length (in feet) times width (in feet), then divide by 44,000? (or is it 42,000?)

That's pretty sad.

Yep, the calculations will work, but when you are talking about a loosely defined area - say, the cleared area from that tree to this bush, all the way to the road - it would be helpful to be able to walk that perimeter and have an application tell us what that area is in terms of acreage.

Yep, my lot measures about 400 feet on a side, but it's a bit of a trapezoid, and hilly and wooded to boot.

I have a couple of apps on my iPad which are also available for iPhone - Distance Measure and Map Measure. It looks like the first one is still free but they're now charging $3 for the second one. I don't recall either one having perimeter-walk functionality, but you can draw the outline of the area over a satellite image and then they calculate the acreage. For most circumstances, I think that's a better method anyway; but of course it won't work for all purposes.

It would be nice if all fields were perfect squares or rectangles, but that is not the case on my farm. And if it were, who wants to drag a hundred foot tape measure through a 30 acre field with lots of room for error.

Fifteen years ago, when GPS technology was just hitting the consumer markets, I had an ag service company map all of my fields with expensive equipment mounted on a 4 wheeler. Ten years ago, before smartphones and Garmin, I purchased my own device that would measure field size, but it cost more than $500. Like everything else, it became outdated and unsupported technology. Five years ago, I bought GPS guidance equipment for my tractors at $2500 a pop, but I have to traverse the entire field to get the size of it. This equipment's main purpose is fertilizer and chemical application accuracy. With the technology we have now, I'm sure there is an inexpensive app for my phone that will enable me to drive the perimeter of a field in 5 minutes to get an acreage estimate.

I saw that one, but it's not really what I'm after. I prefer ground truthing. Trying to draw lines around an arial image on a small screen leaves a lot of room for error in my opinion. This app could serve the purpose for me if I find nothing else. Have you used it? Is it accurate?

They've seemed accurate in my limited testing. Obviously some things are hard to measure accurately with them (e.g. largely wooded lots without overhead visual clues as to perimeter points), but for things with clear edges there isn't much reason for them to not be accurate.

But I can understand what you mean about trying to use them on a phone's screen, they're better suited for a tablet size screen. If it comes to having to use such an app, perhaps you know someone that has a tablet that would let you borrow it. For that matter, I'd guess there are websites that you can use - that functionality may even be built into Google Maps at this point.
