So here you are with your little corporate network that you hold together with no budget, no $$ support from your employer, a roll of duct tape and some baling wire. Two little T110 servers and 40 users. No big deal.
Until one of the server boxes suffers a mechanical failure of drive 0 with your OS partition... and almost simultaneously, drive1 with your backups sufers a logical failure.
Suddenly the president of the company you work for is very interested in spending $$ on building a reliable, redundantly backed up system for your data... too little too late.
Happened to be the PDC and global catalog... kablooie, no way to restore.
Seizing the FSMO roles over to the second box just created more of a headache. In theory, you should be able to rebuild the failed box and rejoin the AD, but too much of the AD on the surviving box was damaged, likely partially written info as they pass the AD and GC data back and forth. Metadata cleanup didn't even help, but I've become a pro with NTDSUtil and ADSIedit for my efforts, ha.
Managed to get everything back up and running by installing Aurora on the failed server box, w/ exchange 2010, etc. Bad mistake. Trouble is, now you can't go back to Server 2003 and Exchange 2003, because you have created a 2008 forest. And Exchange 2010 sucks. $%@#%^
So here I am, middle of the night, blowing it all away and rebuilding the user accounts etc by hand.
I want to work for someone who is willing to spend a few $$ to ensure the systems are in place to make sure crap like this does not happen. If you run a small company, be sure to invest in a good disaster recovery system. A few hundred bucks for raid0 and a few spare drives that you can back up to and swap out daily or weekly to keep safe, goes very far.
