Addiction Dog Food

Has anyone used this brand before? I had our dog on Natural Balance fish and potato food for years and she did pretty well on it. A couple months ago we changed her to Orijen fish and potato formula because I'd heard good things about Orijen. After being on it a few weeks she developed symptoms that indicated there was something in it she wasn't tolerating, loose stools, bad breath and ear smells and itchy skin. Since she'd done well on the Natural Balance for so long we switched her back. Her symptoms cleared for a couple weeks but have started coming back in the past week. She's allergic to corn, chicken, beef, venison, lamb and some undetermined grain or vegtable (I tried a vegetarian formula once and she didn't tolerate it well at all). Addiction makes a wild kangaroo and apple formula. I know she can eat apples without issue and the kangaroo being an uncommon protein I'm hopeful she'll tolerate it. I've never heard of the brand though and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them.

I don't know anything about this brand but will be interested to hear results if you try it. Oliver goes to the vet today to try to figure ou his allergies. Do you know how they test for these?

MK and I were just talking about this last night. I don't recall how they did it just that it was expensive.

I'm thinking that fish is now a problem. :ohwell: My protein choices are now duck, buffalo, kangaroo, or rabbit. I'm hesitant to try the duck or buffalo because they seem awfully close to chicken and beef which she's allergic to. Kangaroo and rabbit are what I'd like to try.

Pixiegirl,
I am really familiar with food allergies with dogs and hate that your pup is going through this.
Just a thought~ I know you all moved last year~ did her allergies or did changes occur or coincide with when you moved? Just another angle since she did do well on one food for a long time and is no longer tolerating it.
Have you ever tried probiotics (acidolophous), plain yogurt, cottage cheese?

Good thought! I have plain yogurt, would you mix it with the dry food, or just give a little dish of it?

We only moved a couple miles away from our old place. The irritation definetly started shortly after I switched her to the Orijen food and she's got all the historic symptoms of food intolerance, smelly ears and breath, itchy skin and loose stools. She was 2 before she developed her corn allergy. I'd had her on NutroMax since she was a puppy. The switch to a food without any corn at all did the trick for a while. It was either chicken or beef based and she did well for several months before flaring up. Switched to the other and the same deal. Then lamb and venison. I've had her to the vet and it's definitely food allergies. She's allergic to bees, fleas and grass too. It's been a long haul but I'm pretty well versed in it now. You should start selling some rabbit or kangaroo food!

I use to give her yogurt but haven't a good while. I'll pick her some up next time I go shopping.

What's the difference in the protein percentage of what you were feeding her and the Orijen? I know Orijen is high. Some dogs do not tolerate high protein very well or it can take some time to get used to it.

I had to have the expensive syrum testing done to one of my boxers and it revealed A TON of grasses, dusts, weeds, as well as all your discussing, beef, veal, turkey, pork, corn, wheat...found out a lot of what I was using to clean the house as well... carpet fresh, air freshners were HUGE !! I now have to keep her on benadryl every day ! Syrum test are expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

Hmmmm, I'll have to look into that. I got some super expensive no grain raw kibble for her a couple years ago that she did horrid on off the get. The Orijen she did ok on for a couple weeks and when I switched her back she did ok for a couple weeks. It seems that when it gets into her system, if you will, she develops issues. Things like corn, chicken and beef she has immediate reactions to. Same with fleas, bees and grass.

Are you familiar at all with addiction?

I joke that my dog shouldn't even lick her own butt because she's probably allergic to herself.

Nope. I did see that Whole Dog Journal removed them from their recommended list.

Have you tried the Bravo raw food?

I think that may be the brand I tried that really set her off. It's been a few years. It was a raw kibble with no grains.

Clippers has Natures Variety rabbit formula. I guess that's a good option to try.

Catt, you were right about the protein, the Orijen has twice what the Natural Balance has. If she doesn't do well on the rabbit I'll look into that further.

I joke about the same thing w/ my vet... as a matter of fact she just had a violent allergic reaction to an antibiotic I gave her last week that I had used less than six months ago to treat a UTI. So in a matter of 6 months she developes A DIFFERENT allergy...can't keep up w/ her !! Poor thing, always diggin at her face and has pink paws from chewing and licking

You know, benadryl isn't something she should get everyday and it will dry out her skin.

Well fortunatley her skin isn't a problem because she's been taking benadryl since she was first diagnosed w/ allergies as a young adult and she's 8 now. Benadryl and betadine solution for the feet is what gets her through, as recommended by my vet.
