Adopted a cat at Tri-County Animal Shelter

Me and the boyfriend adopted a cat from Tri-County Animal Shelter last week, and went to pick it up from Lucky Ones last night. They brought out the wrong cat. It turns out that the cat that I picked out turned out to be postive for feline aids or the more scientific way of putting it FIV. They didn't even bother to call or get in touch with us in any way to tell us that the cat had to be put down. Whats more is that they had that cat in the same cage with another cat and had to put that one down too. I personally think they need to check these cats out for Feline Lekumia and FIV before they even consider to adopt them, because I held this kitten before it was even tested, and I could have transmitted this disease to my own cats at home. Because our cats are inside cats, we don't get them vaccinated for FIV or Lekumia just rabies, because the vaccines have been known to cause tumors. What I found odd was when we back to pick another kitten, every cat that was in there last week was gone, maybe they just accidently put this one down. Needless to say they tested the new kitten before we left. And he turned out NEGATIVE... but I'm still going to get him screened at Tidewater again, poor thing was only 1.6 pounds and covered in fleas so he's gotta weight til he's 2lbs to go get a full health check. So just a word to the wise, be careful about holding and touching the animals and going home to your own. All together though the employees were very understanding about the whole situation, because they do have a tough job, a job that I couldn't bare to do, heck I could barely stand to be in there. But maybe the need to start testing before someone spends the time to pick out the kitten or cat that they want and get there hopes up for that kitten, before someone runs the risks of transmitting a disease to they're pets at home.

Does my butt look big?
Felv and FIV are common in shelters and large untested catteries...Best to test yourself and isolate for 30 days before having it with yours...after 30 days retest to be sure...

What's one more bird?
I'm sorry the kitty you picked out had to be put down :( I do have to say I know for the rescue we work with it's $18 a cat for the test :( I can't imagine them being able to afford to test all the kitties first. I do think you should always take precautions when handling the animals that are not yours. I know with our critters it's best to change clothes and shower after being around other birds (something we keep in mind after birdshows especially). Congratulations on your new kitty!

Thats what I did as soon as I got home that night, and thats why he's getting tested again. This cat isn't living at my house with my cats, he's living at my boyfriends house, so when I came home last night, I had to to quarantine my clothes. Thanks for the kind words. He's fitting in quite nicely, keeping my boyfriend up at night wanting to play, and when he don't wake up, his toes get nibbled on.

I understand that, but what about the people who don't know about those diseases, and how communicable they are. I know about the dieseases(sp) but I figured the pound might have tested them before they would get peoples hopes up on a cat, and risk all the other cats in the shelter getting it. It's very easy to spread.

Did you ask? If I went to a shelter...or someones cattery I would wash my clothes as soon as I got home anyway...shoes and all...Thats me...If I got a new cat that was to go in the cattery with mine it would be tested..if neg isolated..for 30 days...then retested..

I had never adopted from a shelter before, we always found our cats on the streets as strays. I had just assumed that they were safe, but you know what happens when you assume...

I am glad you found a kitten, sorry about the first one. It wouldn't be affordable to test them all unfortunately until they have a chance or interested party. So many come in every day and so many get sick in the shelter. Two of the ones I was going to foster from PG ended up sick and put down.

thanks, he's the cutest little guy ever. it just hit me hard. but now my other cat smokey is sick i think, he started sneezing tuesday night and hasn't stopped and I'm a bit worried. I called tidewater to talk to the vet, but they keep giving me a run around saying one of the doctors are going to call me, they have yet to. I hope he doesnt have a upper respertory(sp) infection. I tried my hardest to clean and de contaminate my clothes and myself before i came home from my boyfriends where the kitten is.

How are your kittiens? Have you adopted any of them? I had 3 people looking to adopt kitties yesterday...

I have one ready for adoption too. She is black and white and about 3-4 months old. I call her Charlotte because she was a rescue from Charlotte Hall.
