Just days after legislative analysts warned that Maryland is facing a $200 million-dollar deficit, health care advocates are lobbying the leadership of the General Assembly to hike taxes on payroll, tobacco and alcohol to pay for health insurance for the state’s uninsured.

If they would just leagalize slots and tax them, it would help alot. Now, Deleware and WV are taking all the taxes in that Maryland is missing out on. If someone is against slots, just dont play them. Not much different than the lottery.

Doesn't surprise me at all. When one party has a monopoly on government, things usually get out of control in a hurry. I'd like to know how the state government plans to handle policy when there is a mass exodus out of the state or more folks start buying their cigarettes out of state.

A better tax would be put on inner-city hair and nail salons, cell phone services, etc.

Since the Tobacco tax is intended as a revenue generator, not a deterrent as some politicians tell you in their lies, this will not be the last hike. As people quit smoking, they will continue to raise the tax because they are addicted to the income just like the smokers are addicted to the nicotine.
