Both my kids use nightlights. Youngest is convince that Big Foot lives in our house and whenever something "strange" happens in our house, youngest will lean over to me and quietly say.... "It must be Big Foot". Meanwhile both kids lover SciFi channel and watch the most stomach churning stuff with smiles on their faces.

I had the same problem with my oldest when Monsters Inc first came out. We used 2 ideas and they worked great!

1. (CHEAPEST) We used "Monster Powder". we bought some baby Powder and we would dust it in her closetand under her bed every night and it would get rid of the monsters. Then when we would do our daily vacuuming, we would vacuum it up.

2. Wen tto Wal Mart and bought this "monster in your closet" book. It comes with a monster that you actually hang in your closet. The book tells the story of the Moster that hangs in your closet that scares away the bad monsters.

The combination of the 2 worked wonders.

I used to reassure my son there was no such thing but we would check under the bed and in the closets anyway if he insisted. Many children are afraid of "monsters in the closet" and will eventually outgrow it (LOL, my teenager still sleeps with a nightlight!). There is no magic bullet, so just keep reassuring her and soothe her if she calls you in the middle of the night.

I glow in the dark. Do you want me to come stand in your kid's room tonight?

...night light for her room? Get her her own little flashlight? She'll grow out of it.

A while back both kids decided they were selectively afraid of the dark. They always sleep in a dark room with no night light, but they were afraid to walk down the hallway when the light was off. As soon as it started, it stopped.

thanks for the advice all! she has a nightlight now, I'll send her in with her flashlight tonight too.

Bohman seemed to find a good idea too. Last night, he tucked her in with her dora doll and reminded her that dora helps protect all her friends and help the baby animals find their mommies. she curled up with dora and pulled the blanket over both of them and that seemed to settle her down a bit.

If it was Monsters Inc that frightened her, maybe getting a Monsters Inc doll and making it her friend and protector would help. One of the "good guys", or one character that she thought was particularly funny. Let her sleep with it to scare away Randolf.....

I think you should take her to Disney and let her see the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor Attraction, my kids (2 and 10) loved texting in their jokes and hearing the monsters tell them on stage. A trip to Disney would make me forget any fear.

I'm 45 years old and STILL afraid of the dark

Why make her get over it? Just put a nightlight in her room and let her outgrow it when she's ready.

When my oldest ( 6 ) was 3 years old, he became afraid of Huxley in "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland". He watched that movie over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. My poor mother cringed when I recently took the movie to her house when she was babysitting the oldest and youngest.

Anywho .... nightly we had to go into the room and tell the mosters to get out, go home, go away. It was a ritual. He also required the light on in his room.

I didn't make a big deal out of it. I would turn off the light after he was asleep when I was on my way to bed. He isn't scared of Huxley anymore, he just outgrew it, but he still sleeps w/ the light on. No biggie.

I know a few other adults who are afraid of the dark. I guess I can sort of understand it, but I still don't get it. Even when I was a wee slip of a lad, I've always thought that perfectly pitch darkness and silence was extremely soothing. Therapeutic even. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept that it can be frightening.

The only thing to be afraid of in the dark is that you might whang your toe on something hard if you have to shoot to the bathroom real quick-like, and you don't have your furniture pattern burned into memory.
