Air Cards

Anyone got one and have any advice to give?

Specifically, do you have to have cell service in the area in which to get them?

I'm a computer idiot so I don't know, but I ran into someone in VA who had one and loved it.

Thanks.

I have one through Sprint, I've had it for a couple of years. Coverage is spotty, it works in Lexington Park, but not at home in Port Tobacco. The speed is comparible to a fast dial-up connection. There are some newer cards out there that are can provide speeds closer to broadband.

I have tested out Verizon Wireless, Sprint/Nextel, Cingular and a 56k AT&T airtime card. They are all great, but it all depends on your location.

-Verizon Wirelss is great but their data network is not the same as their voice network.
-Sprint's new latest card is good because it is designed for EVDO.
-Cingular was ok, but they do not have enough towers. The last time I talked to the DC region engineers, they said AT&T and Cingular would combine their cellular towers around July 2006.

I had cigular on my work laptop for a while. It could not handle tieing into the main office server. I now have a verizon broadband card which works pretty good. It has its moments, seems like it might slow up during peak hours, but it even then it's still faster than the cingular.

I live in Clements (just outside Leonardtown) and using Verizon's EV-DO via my laptop. So far (about 11 months) it has worked great!

We just got Cingular this weekend, enjoying is so far. It has the same speed as the previous provider (we used SOMD wireless). The real test will be a trip to Oklahoma.

I've noticed that the Sprint card I have works well on the road, provided you don't venture to far from the Interstate Highway.

Do you have this EVDO system? Does it really have these kinds of speeds?

I have been contemplating on getting the supercharged system.
Still trying to get my xbox360 online.

My "average speed" is 80+ UP and 800+ DOWN

Now, while Verizon states "unlimited" the small print says you can't stream music, play games, etc. - just surf, check mail, etc. They have also terminated a bunch of users who exceeded 5+ Gigs of usage (per month). So - you might not want to go the Verizon EV-DO route.

Hope this helps.

hmmm I never knew unlimited service had a limit..... Guess I better take it easy on my laptop then. Thanks for the input

Verizon has a long history of offering their limited "Unlimited" service. I used to use them for dial-up when they were still Bell Atlantic, had thier Unlimited dial-up service and was surprised when I got my $150 bill because I went over my limit on usage. I asked how I can exceed an unlimited account and was told that there are limits. It is due to this false advertising I am now an Earthlink customer.

Unfortunately, they just don't care. I guess that happens when you get real BIG! I kept my Earthlink account for traveling. I take advantage of their 800 number when I can't get access any other way.

Take care...

That is why my cell phone is a Nextel and My internet is through Earthlink. I try to avoid Verizon as much as possible, due to their textbook examples of how not to run a customer service department!

I'm going to try out the Verizon wireless broadband once I'm up for a phone trade in (October). I'm looking at the XV6700.
