Passenger Jet Skids Off Toronto Runway

TORONTO -- A passenger jetliner caught fire Tuesday after skidding off a runway in a fierce thunderstorm at Pearson airport in Toronto. Black smoke billowed from the wreckage as the aircraft burned.

A ticket agent in Montreal with Air France said the plane was its AF358 flight from Paris to Toronto, an Airbus A340. "That's all we know," the agent said.

Witnesses told Canadian television stations that the plane, configured for 252 passengers, had apparently skidded off the runway after coming in to land in rainy conditions.

Isn't that airplane (Airbus 340) the largest passenger craft in service?

Heck of a tragedy. Lot of folks will be in mourning tonight.

Air France Plane Crash 08-02-2005 06:01 PM That was mean.

I get this "mean" crap all the time, but when I look at the post that I was supposedly mean in, it's not mean. Somebody out there is terribly sensitive.

....

It's a big plane but is no larger than the the 747's in service today. The 340 carries approx 320-375 ppl depending on configuration, classes, etc.

USAToday said there were approximately 200 people on board. If they all got out alive, that is truly awesome news.

:roflmao: That about sums it up. The media is a big dog and it will eat everything it can, when they can.

BBC and Toronto News Service reports that 297 passengers and 14 crewmembers made it off the plane with minor injuries.

Ain't that some kind of miracle?

I would much rather hear 50 retellings of how all those people survived a plane crash than 50 retellings of how some kid got shot up in southeast....good news is always alright with me. :yay:

A miracle? Not really. The plane skidded off the runway. It didn't screw itself into the ground. Planes skid off the runway more than most folks will ever know. The only reason why this one made the news is because it caught fire, which was probably a wing tank that exploded. Its no miracle. This stuff happens. There's two databases that can be searched free of charge via the internet of all accidents and incidents that occur in the transportation industry.

Oh, if you fly alot and are easily freaked out by statistics, it's probably not a good idea for you to look into these websites.

But, there is some VERY good information on those sites, especially the FAA site for folks that fly alot, or even a first time traveler.

Enjoy.
