Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing ethics questions after revelations the freshman lawmaker's office gave her boyfriend a congressional email account.

The democratic socialist waded into the issue in response to a tweet alleging boyfriend Riley Roberts had been put on staff. The tweet included a screenshot of an official House email address. Ocasio-Cortez insisted that he was only given the email account so he could access her calendar.

“Actually this calendar designation is a permission so he can have access to my Google Calendar. Congressional spouses get Gcal access all the time,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote, after political consultant Luke Thompson tweeted the picture showing Roberts having an official account like other staffers on the Hill. "Next time check your facts before you tweet nonsense."

Asked about the arrangement, David O'Boyle, the spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, told Fox News: "From time to time, at the request of members, spouses and partners are provided House email accounts for the purposes of viewing the member’s calendar."

But Jason Chaffetz, former chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Ocasio-Cortez' claims don’t stack up.

"It’s totally naïve and inappropriate – you wouldn’t allow it in most companies, let alone the House of Representatives. There should be real consequences,” Chaffetz told Fox News.

“When I was in the House, my scheduler would forward my wife my schedule once a week. But you’re not allowed unfettered access. And he isn’t even her spouse,” he added. “... It should be referred to the ethics committee for further investigation.”

With her being a socialist, I'm surprised everyone in her district didn't get a congressional email address.

Must be allowable otherwise sys admins wouldn’t have created an account.

Sadly, you're probably right. The problem is the system/leadership, not AOC in particular.

The leadership in this case is just some IT guys who are following policy. Not political appointees.

The person who “leaked” this in twitter got suspended for violating their TOS. I wonder how he came into possession of these materials?

Crow is right about this, It's a nothingburger. Who cares if she wants her boyfriend on her email account.

I'm guessing that the IT guys ARE following policy. Now, I also bet leadership sets the policy, which is what I am saying is wrong, thus leadership is wrong.

well if her BF is on the staff, I am guessing he gets an official email address

We also don't know if that's like actually deliverable e-mail address. It could just be an alias that actually links to another external address. I have a hunch if one sent mail to it, the mail would bounce as undeliverable. Might as well try it, the address was published.

My understanding is that he only has permissions allowing him to access her calendar but not any other email function. I have no problem with that since he needs to know when she might be coming home

Up. Identified. Lase. Fire. On the way.

And we want to know why it is such a small step toward official email (and classified email in some cases) being hosted on personal servers. I'm sure this is something members of both parties abuse. Like Chaffetz or not, he's absolutely correct on this issue. May be a nothingburger due to IT policy, but it's a wrong and crappy nothingburger.

Seems it's not taking long at all for AOC to be assimilated into the collective that is the DC Swamp.

Because power. Such an intoxicating aphrodisiac.

Speaking of AOC....

From (link): Report: Ocasio-Cortez Is Living The High Life In Luxury DC Apartments

==========================================================

Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made a big deal about not being able to afford rent in both New York City and Washington, D.C. She said that, without her $174,000 salary as a Congresswoman, she wouldn't be able to afford two apartments.

[...]

Fast forward a couple months later and Ocasio-Cortez is now living in luxury apartments in Washington, D.C.'s Navy Yard neighborhood, where rent for a studio apartment exceeds $2,000 a month, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

From the Free Beacon:

Her office pushed back against the notion that it was hypocritical for Ocasio-Cortez, who has made housing affordability one of her top policy concerns, to move into a luxury building. A spokesman pointed out that her office also uses a car with an "internal combustion engine that runs on fossil fuels," even though she thinks their use should be eliminated.
[...]

If AOC wants to live in luxury apartments, fine. But do us all a favor and stop preaching to everyone else about how we should spend our hard earned money, especially when you're not willing to put your own money where your mouth is.

I guess she's too hip to "bunk out." But I wonder - given her desire to eliminate cars & that she lives so close to a station - why she doesn't feel she can't use the Metro...?

When reading stories like this about politicians, remember the pigs in Orwell's Animal Farm.

One thing that has always bugged me is calling AOC, and her kind, congresswoman. It doesn't roll off the tongue easily. Congress is a national legislative body, and, was established by the Constitution of 1787, and, is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Now we don't go around calling Senator Mitch McConnell, Congressman McConnell. Why is it we call Representatives congressman? I believe, from hence forth, all, including the media, should refrain from the use of the word congressman, or congresswoman, and use the proper title. Only because it will piss off the women of being identified as women in their title. (hahahahaha) In addition, and however, to always add insult to injury. When addressing a male member of the House of Representatives, it would still be acceptable to address them as Congressman. Female members, however, should only be addressed as Representative, or House Representative, or US House Representative. Just a thought.
