All the King's Men

Watch the trailer...

Despite being published sixty years ago, the themes of author Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning novel All the King's Men remain as relevant today as they were then. This is proven by the new film adaptation by Steven Zaillian, the celebrated screenwriter of Schindler's List. The film follows a rambunctious Louisiana governor who flirts with corruption and his conflicted right-hand man.

Performances are across-the-board terrific. Sean Penn delivers one of the best performances of his career, channeling the pulpit-pounding ferocity of Puritan Jonathan Edwards and creating a cunning, ferocious screen character. Jude Law delivers a charming and restrained performance, coveying the moral conflict of his character well. Kate Winslet and Anthony Hopkins are also excellent playing a blond beauty involved with both male protagonists and a legendary judge who cannot be intimidated respectively.

Zaillian, with noted cinematographer Pawel Edelman, does a superlative job re-creating the mood of rural Louisiana in the '40s. And his screenplay discusses the theme of corruption in politics while not sacrifing the flow of the suspenseful storyline. All the King's Men is certain to be on my year end top 10 list. It's a powerful all-you-can-eat buffet of outstanding acting, directing, and screenwriting. Recommended!

Hmmm, I don't get it, all the reviews I have read gave it a "ho-hum".
Why remake an Academy Award Winning classic with the perfect actor in Broderick Crawford?
Hollywood studios desperate to turn around their fortunes have denegrated a classic piece of American culture for the sake of a few bucks. What was a beautifully written book full of complexity and a study of the very nature of humanity was reduced to a melodramatic compilation of scenes full of bad accents and pointless acting. Such an incredible shame.
Gee, and to think; I enjoy Sean Penn's acting! :yay:

Hmm, it seems most professional critics did hate this film. I guess I'm in the minority. I thought it was a great movie.

And the director of this, Steven Zaillian, has said he's never seen the '40s film and considers this as a new adaptation of the Robert Penn Warren novel, not a remake. I don't mind it arriving now. The themes of the story SHOULD be brought to today's audience.

The quality of a film is inversely proportional to the amount of advertising on TV. Therefore this film is no good. Also,Sean Penn stars, therefore it is especially no good.
